What happened

The episode as NWS PHI wrote it up.

A cold front moved through the Great Lakes region on June 21, while Tropical Storm Claudette passed offshore of New Jersey and the Delmarva region. Ahead of the cold front, a hot, humid, and unstable air mass developed in the mid-Atlantic. A pre-frontal trough then served as a focus for widespread convection across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic during the afternoon and evening hours. With the strong instability and good forcing, much of the convection became strong to severe, taking the form of both linear and semi-discrete activity. Damaging winds were by far the primary hazard with these storms, with numerous reports of downed trees and power lines across the region. Convection weakened as it approached the coast owing to loss of daytime heating, weakening shear, and large scale subsidence on the northwest flank of Claudette.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will weaken across the area tonight while low
pressure moves across the Great Lakes and southern Canada. A
cold front attached to the low will pass across the region Tuesday.
This will be followed by quiet weather as high pressure builds across
the Mid-Atlantic through the remainder of the work week. An area
of low pressure will cross the Great Lakes and drag a cold front
closer to our forecast area into the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Tonight...Severe thunderstorm watch #304 has been issued for the
entire CWA through midnight. Storms, many severe, are developing
across wrn/central PA and over wrn MD attm. This activity will
feed on the hot and humid airmass in place and keep the activity
rolling E across our area this evening. Prepare for severe
weather now, before it arrives. Damaging winds and hail are
possible with the storms.

After the tstms dissipate, mostly cloudy conditions with a few
showers overnight. Lows will drop into the upper 50s N/W and
upper 60s to low 70s for Delmarva and srn NJ.

Tuesday...The cold front will continue across NJ/Delmarva during
the day with more showers developing along it so likely or categorical

will be below normal reaching only in the low 60s N/W and
low/mid 70s S/E.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure at the surface and weak subsidence aloft will result
in tranquil weather Tuesday night through Wednesday night. Diurnal
strato-cu deck will develop Wednesday afternoon but otherwise fair
through the period.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A weak wave of low pressure forms along the stalled trough to our
south across the Carolinas, which tries to play difficult and nudge
its way northward late Thursday into Friday. Meanwhile, a series of
shortwave troughs will gradually amplify a long wave trough across
the Midwest this weekend. A southwest flow between the Midwest
trough and western Atlantic ridge will result in periods of showers
across the region Saturday into Monday especially west of the
Delaware Valley.
