Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Little Rock AR 547 PM CST Wed Feb 17 2021 .AVIATION... Continuing to see snow fall at all but the northern Terminals in the state, with KLLQ transitioning over to sleet. Will continue to see snow ending from west to east during the overnight hours. Ceilings will do little to improve on Thursday with MVFR conditions forecast. && .PREV DISCUSSION...(ISSUED 334 PM CST Wed Feb 17 2021) SHORT TERM...Tonight Through Friday A strong upper low pressure system continues in southern Canada with a short wave in the Plains. This trough will continue moving east tonight and through Arkansas Friday. Snow continues across the southeast half of the area at this time. Radar showed heavy snow in the Pine Bluff, Rison, and Star City areas. The heavy snow is expected to continue through this evening. The snow will slowly diminish after midnight. Some areas will see an additional 4 to 6 inches this afternoon and tonight. The Winter Storm Warning continues into Thursday morning. Travel will be dangerous to impossible in the southeast half of the state especially. Snow may also mix with sleet at times in the southeast. The cold will continue through Friday. Single digit wind chills are expected in the north Thursday morning. Lows will be in the teens and 20s tonight and single digits and teens Thursday night. High temperatures will be in the mid 20s to mid 30s Thursday and upper 20s to mid 30s Friday. LONG TERM...Friday Night Through Wednesday Dry conditions are expected Friday night through early Sunday, with NW flow aloft and surface high pressure expanding across the southern Plains. High pressure will shifts eastward through the end of the weekend, while an upper trough quickly moves across the central/southern Plains. A storm system will develop near the SE CO/TX Panhandle and move across the state, bringing chances for rain and brief periods of a rain/snow mix Sunday night through Monday morning. The wintry mix will be short-lived and no significant impacts are expected. The system will exit early Monday and high pressure will follow, with dry conditions expected through the end of the period. Forecast high temperatures will increase from the upper 30s and lower 40s Saturday afternoon to the mid 50s and lower 60s by the middle of the week. The snow, heavy at times, will be confined mainly to the southeast half of Arkansas. Some sleet and freezing rain will mix with the snow in the far southeast. Snowfall rates up to two inches per hour will be noted in places, especially in the southern counties. This is where accumulations could exceed a foot at some locations. Otherwise, amounts from four to ten inches will be common. Roads are already snow covered and hazardous, and travel is not advised. Whiteout conditions at times and darkness will make driving even more dangerous. People are asked to stay off roads to allow crews to treat and clear the pavement. In the south, new additional snow plus snow that fell a couple of days ago may create enough weight to compromise roofs on some structures. This includes roofs on homes and businesses, barns, sheds, and chicken houses. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday Through Tuesday While snow will remain in the forecast through early Thursday afternoon, additional snowfall amounts will remain generally less than an inch for most areas on Thursday. Expect this storm system to move out of the region by Thursday night. However, temperatures will remain well below normal through Friday, with lows in the single digits and teens by Friday morning.
