Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 220 AM PDT Sat Jun 27 2020 .SYNOPSIS...A low pressure system will move through the Silver State this weekend bringing strong winds with blowing dust, thunderstorms, valley rain, and mountain snow. Snow levels will drop down to about 7000 feet Monday morning as valley temperatures dip into the 30s. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday night. The exiting low pressure system is crossing into Arizona this morning. Clouds are dissipating across northern Nye County but otherwise skies have cleared out everywhere else. With weak shortwave ridging over the Great Basin presently, temperatures are very mild, ranging from the mid 50s to the mid 60s. The short term models are in very good agreement, bringing a smorgasbord of weather for the last weekend in June. Today. This should be a dry period between systems. The next low pressure system will begin to descend from Canada. As the pressure gradient begins to tighten from this broad trough feature, winds will begin to get gusty over northern and western Nevada. Winds are expected to be below advisory criteria however gusts may pick up some dust across western Nevada and spread it across Lander and Eureka counties. This will be mainly a fire weather concern with the dry conditions. Most areas will see temperatures in the 90s. Saturday evening. Central low pressure over Canada will begin to morph, sending a strong low center southward into Washington state. There could be some thunderstorms developing across northern Humboldt and Elko counties as the unstable air moves in. There is also some low level convergence showing up across southern White Pine County and near the boundary between northern and southern Nye County. A few showers are possible there as well. The pressure gradient will tighten and as wind gusts strengthen in the evening, blowing dust will spread to eastern Humboldt and most of Elko County. Midnight Saturday night through Sunday morning. The approaching low will move through Washington and into Oregon. A risk for showers will persist across northern Humboldt and northern Elko counties overnight. Low temperatures for most areas will remain mild but cold air will seep into the north. Minimum temperatures will mainly be in the 50s...40s near the Oregon and Idaho borders. Sunday afternoon and evening. Low pressure will move through Oregon and into Idaho. A strong shortwave lobe extending off the low center will move a cold front through the LKN CWFA. Winds will be strongest across central Nevada and a Wind Advisory is in effect. Model instability is negligible however there should be some lightning along the cold front. High temperatures will range from the 60s north of Interstate 80 to the 80s south of Interstate 80. Midnight Sunday night through early Monday morning. Low pressure will move east across central Idaho. The low center will outrun the trough axis that will extend through Battle Mountain and Lovelock by daybreak. Showers will continue across eastern Nevada as cold air moves in. Elevations as low as 7000 feet will see some snow accumulation. Low temperatures will be in the 30s. .LONG TERM...Monday through next Saturday. Monday through Tuesday. Next week is still on track to have an active start with an low pressure system translating across the west. This low should form and then drag a cold across NV Sunday and Monday. The low center should then dip into NV Monday afternoon which should see it weaken and progress to the northeast Through Tuesday. Overall this should lead to an active weather pattern across NV. The cold front should cause showers mainly in eastern NV that are looking to last through Monday evening with the best shot for rain showers being towards White Pine County. The low center will bring it own moisture to northern NV causing another region of showers that should last through Tuesday. The best shot of rain out of this region of showers is looking to be in northern Humboldt and Elko Counties. Thunderstorms are looking to be possible in both areas which can be a fire concern as these are looking to be dry mixed with wet storms over a fairly large are of NV. The low system is also looking to bring a fairly tight packed gradient with it as it moves across NV. This should lead to fairly windy days with Sunday seeing strong breezy winds with weaker but still gusty winds for Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures should be cool post cold front with Monday seeing the coldest temperatures. Wednesday through Saturday. The low pressure system should give way to a general trough pattern through Thursday before being ousted be a building high pressure system that is looking to last into Independence weekend. This should lead to a period of dry weather across NV with fairly light winds and mostly clear skies. Temperatures are also looking to warm through this period with 90s returning across NV. && .AVIATION...Dry with VFR conditions through at least the mid- morning hours. Winds increase later this morning, which may result in blowing dust and reduced visibilities by the early afternoon at KWMC and KBAM. Later this afternoon and early this evening blowing dust may reach KEKO. Late this afternoon and early evening there is also a slight chance of thunderstorm activity over portions of northern and central NV. Have VCTS in the KEKO TAF beginning at 23Z. Next best chance for TS activity at a terminal would be at KTPH early this evening, however for now not enough confidence to add VCTS to KTPH. && .FIRE WEATHER...As low pressure moves through the Pacific Northwest and Idaho, winds will become gusty across northern Nevada and western Nevada today, then east central Nevada on Sunday. Gusty winds will create critical fire weather conditions across parts of northern Nevada today, shifting southward over central Nevada Sunday. Wind gusts will reach 40 mph today across zones 424, 437, 438, and 469. Winds may reach 50 mph on Sunday afternoon for zones 424 426 and 427. Combined with temperatures in the 90s and low humidity values in the single digits, Red Flag Warnings are in effect for the above-mentioned fire zones. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
