Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 212 PM PST Sat Feb 15 2020 ..SYNOPSIS...A weather disturbance will bring a mix of rain and snow to northern and parts of central Nevada beginning late tonight lasting into Monday morning. Lingering light snow showers will diminish Monday before another extended period dry conditions settle into the area Monday night and Tuesday. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday. Increasing upper-level moisture and cloud cover continues to move into the state within a northwest flow regime. A few showers are expected across far northern Nevada late today but amounts will be negligible. An embedded weak trough will set off more widespread rain and snow for Sunday. Temperatures are likely to remain above freezing in many locations across the state tonight, resulting in reduced impacts from snow during the day on Thursday. Considerable higher elevation snow is expected above 5500 feet with up to a foot in the highest mountains. Advisory level snow is most likely across northern Elko county and the Ruby mountains. A cold front will move through the area late Sunday with temperatures dropping Sunday night to below freezing. This could result in a flash freeze episode causing slick roads as snow will be the primary precipitation type. A few snow showers are possible across northeastern Nevada Monday before diminishing tonight. Gusty winds are expected Sunday but will remain below advisory levels. Above normal temperatures are expected through Sunday with the cold front bringing highs back down to seasonable levels in the 40s for Monday and Tuesday. LONG TERM...Tuesday night through next Saturday. No precipitation is expected during the long term period. The upper flow pattern is not exactly stagnant, however a general trough pattern will emerge with a orientation towards the northeast which will minimize any introduction of moisture, even when central low pressure moves out over the Pacific late in the week. High temperatures will be above normal. Low temperatures will be below normal. OUTLOOK...Model agreement is not that great going into next weekend. However it is possible for a wet system to move in on Sunday February 24th. && AVIATION... Conditions will deteriorate from west to east tonight with VFR ending. VCSH conditions will start as early as 03z at KWMC. More confident of rain or a mix of rain and snow after 12z Sunday at KWMC and KEKO where MVFR conditions are expected.
