Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 203 PM PDT Sun Apr 5 2020 .SYNOPSIS...Look for periods of unsettled weather tonight through the first half of next week, then warmer and drier conditions over the latter half of next week. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday night. Scattered rain showers are beginning to develop where sunshine was abundant, especially in Elko county. Some of the cells have been showing cloud pulses, but have not seen any lightning just yet. Even so, will keep the isolated thunderstorms in the forecast for tonight. Current wind advisory looking good as Tonopah has gusted to 45 mph and Eureka has reached a sustained 30 mph. Will continue the advisory through the evening as intended. Shower activity is expected to expand during the evening. The main upper low, which has been watched over the last week or so, is just off the coast of northwest California. The upper low's forward progression will be very slow over the next day or so. With the cloud cover this evening, expecting another warm night with readings in the 30s. Models are depicting the upper low to drift slightly to the southwest, with a center of circulation remaining off the coast of mid-California. A south to southwest fetch will keep some moisture moving into the area. Considered a possible elevation-based winter advisory but current models are showing a decrease in the amount of QPF and snowfall - so did not issue. Sites in central Nevada could see an inch or two during the overnight with the highest amounts in the higher terrain. Highs on Monday will be in the 50s in the north with 40s and 50s in the central part of the forecast area. Breezy to windy conditions are possible in central Nevada but magnitudes are not expected to be reaching advisory criteria. Monday night through Tuesday night. The upper low will continue its slow jig southeast with a position just off the coast of southwest California Tuesday night. Look for showers to continue Monday night into Tuesday, with showers decreasing to more isolated by Tuesday morning in the northern sections of the area. Overnight lows will be in the 20s and 30s. Could see some instability showers area-wide Tuesday afternoon with highs in the 50s. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Sunday. The slow-moving low pressure system will be positioned near the Southern California/Arizona border on Wednesday. Some wrap around showers will be possible, but will be more scattered and likely confined to central Nevada. Highs will be in the mid 50's to the mid 60's. Wednesday or Thursday will be the last day for the wrap around showers (The EC still indicates a slower exit of the Low). By Friday dry conditions will prevail across the state with continued warming temperatures, with warmest valleys possibly reaching into the lower 70's. Lows will be mainly in the 30's. An inside slider may clip Nevada on Saturday or Sunday. This could bring a few showers to northeastern Nevada but will likely just brings some cloud there and possibly some cooling temperatures. Confidence is low, however, in the weekend weather. && .AVIATION...Showers and a few isolated thunderstorms will continue this evening in northern Nevada, including Interstate 80 around KWMC, KBAM, and KEKO. Periods of showers will remain possible tonight through Monday across central and northern Nevada, with an isolated thunderstorm possible at any station on Monday afternoon. MVFR CIGS and VIS are possible in heavier showers with a low chance tempo IFR CIG. Precipitation type is expected to remain rain at all stations, though could possibly mix with snow early Monday morning at KTPH. Windy conditions will continue across central parts of the state through the evening where southerly winds will gust to around 35 kts at KELY and KTPH.
