What happened

The episode as NWS TFX wrote it up.

Southwesterly flow and associated shortwave energy streaming ahead of a Pacific Northwest trough brought thunderstorms with heavy rain and gusty winds to Southwest and portions of Central/North-central Montana on Thursday July 23rd. Abundant moisture was transported into state as precipitable water values exceeded the one inch mark at times. This helped push MLCAPE values up to 1000 j/kg, while the aforementioned shortwave energy provided 25 to 35 kts of bulk shear. Storms first moved into the southwest during the late morning and early afternoon hours, while northern areas were impacted later in the day.
