Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Dodge City KS 537 AM CDT Tue Jun 9 2020 ...Updated Aviation Discussion... .SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Tuesday evening) Issued at 1149 PM CDT Mon Jun 8 2020 Gusty south winds and warm overnight temperatures will continue ahead of an approaching cold front that will begin to push through the CWA in the next few hours west to east during the early morning time frame. This will be quite a strong cold front and abnormal for this time of year with the biggest threat being high damaging winds. Winds behind the front will initially gust up to 40 mph before increasing up to 50-60 mph during the afternoon hours with some isolated areas even up to 70 mph due to peak heating and developing rain showers associated with the post frontal trough. Accumulations up to 3/4 of an inch possible along the I-70 corridor and up to half an inch north of the Hwy 50 corridor. Points south of this line will remain mainly dry missing out on the much needed rainfall. Temperatures will drop during the morning into the 50s to low 60s with not much of a warmup in the 60s to low 70s west to east across the CWA. The strong gradient also aided with the tropical storm to the east will begin to relax some into the late evening hours and overnight into Wednesday morning seeing northwest gusts up to 20-30 mph continuing. Any rain showers still lingering during the evening will push east of the CWA after sunset with clearing skies overnight as well due to high pressure building back into the CWA from the northwest. Expect another dry and warming pattern to return to the viewing area into the long term through the end of the work week and into next weekend. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 101 AM CDT Tue Jun 9 2020 After an active short term forecast with a brief but welcomed cool down, a dry and warming trend is in store for the short term through the weekend and into early next week. Upper level ridging will build back in across the Rockies and high plains with surface high pressure dominating the state as it slides to the east throughout the week. No precipitation is expected during the entire period with the only story will be with hot temperatures and windy conditions. Morning low temperatures will be in the 50s for Thursday morning and back up into the 60s to near 70 degrees by the weekend. As for afternoon high temperatures, widespread low to mid 80s for Wednesday before reaching the low 90s for Thursday and Friday. The weekend, however, will bump back into the upper 90s to around the 100 degree mark once again through early next work week due to a strong southerly surge as winds increase during the time. A leeside trough will develop and develop once again over eastern Colorado with the northwesterly flow aloft allowing for a tighter pressure gradient across the CWA with downsloping low level winds to help aid in the tremendous warmup. In essence, enjoy the brief cool down for this time of year in the short term and even the beginning of the long term before going right back to the cooker for the foreseeable future with little to no relief in sight. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Wednesday morning) Issued at 534 AM CDT Tue Jun 9 2020 MVFR ceilings as cold front continues to push through the CWA.
