Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 128 PM MDT Thu Jul 2 2020 .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Saturday night. A low pressure system remains positioned over WRN Canada with several well defined disturbances embedded in the cyclonic flow. Radar continued to show weak returns/light isolated showers across the SE Highlands early this afternoon associated with the right-rear-quad of an exiting upper jet. HiRES numerical models (3 of 4) along with the operational GFS and NAM show enhanced convective activity firing across the Malta region this afternoon which spreads NE through the evening before dissipating after midnight. A second round of enhanced thunderstorm activity is expected to develop along a line from Mackay to Dillon Friday afternoon where a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms has been highlighted by the Severe Prediction Center (SPC) associated with dynamical forcing as a result of the Canadian low starting to eject NE. Much of the thunderstorm activity lifts further north and east into Montana by Saturday as the low continues to eject further NE into NRN Saskatchewan. Thus the 4th looks fairly devoid of thunderstorm activity however we may see locally breezy conditions across the CNTRL mountains as a result of the enhanced flow aloft associated with the ejecting low. Daytime highs continue to rise to and through climatological norms Friday into Saturday. Huston .LONG TERM...Sunday through next Thursday. Southwest flow continues across the region through the extended. Upper lows depicted by earlier model runs have shifted well north of the region. There still could be a few minor systems embedded in the flow that could produce an isolated storm over the high country. As a whole, the extended forecast looks drier with near normal temperatures. 13 && .AVIATION...Thunderstorms remain possible from BYI to DIJ late this afternoon and this evening, possibly affecting PIH and IDA as well. But probably remaining south to not affect SUN. Models once again indicating some very light shower activity possible near daybreak which may affect SUN. Good chance this could be nothing more than a mid cloud deck or sprinkles, but opted to mention as there was some sprinkles around this morning in a similar setup. 13 && .FIRE WEATHER...Isolated thunderstorms remain possible into the weekend. Breezy conditions are possible across portions of Salmon- Challis over the next couple of afternoons.
