.SYNOPSIS...Cooler temperatures are forecast for the remainder of
the week and into the weekend. While a few isolated showers and
thunderstorms are possible across the southern interior until early
evening, mostly dry conditions will likely prevail through the
weekend. Shower chances increase late Sunday night into Monday.
Dry weather returns to all areas by Tuesday.

.DISCUSSION...as of 2:03 PM PDT Friday...The last few pockets of
wrap-around light rain has stretched northwest to San Benito and
southeastern Monterey county. Showers and a slight chance of
thunderstorms is forecast for the southern mountains of San Benito
county for the afternoon and early evening. To the north ongoing
plentiful moisture in the form of low clouds and cool air
advection to neutral temperature advection continues to interact
with the coastal terrain possibly producing either patchy light
drizzle or mist. A renewal of lower level cool air advection will
further deepen the marine layer tonight. This coupled with an
amplifying 500 mb trough arriving from the northwest tonight and
Saturday morning will quite likely keep low and even mid level
cloudiness firmly in place tonight and Saturday morning. A little
less certain about a chance of convection in the North Bay for the
evening with low clouds and cooler temperatures persisting. It's
a fairly arduous climb for temperatures this afternoon
particularly on the immediate coast with clouds pouring in from
the west. Recent pilot reports show cloud thicknesses 800 to 1,000
feet vicninity SFO. Except for partial afternoon clearing inland
Saturday and Sunday low clouds may stubbornly persist, there's no
real near term mechanism or process for clearing forecast aside
from diurnal surface based warming and mixing; onshore breezes
will keep daytime temperatures coolest at the coast.

A shortwave ridge arrives Saturday night into Sunday. On the heels
of this ridge will be a splitting 500 mb trough, less focused energy
is what appears to be the case with this trough thus less chances
of rain for late weekend and Monday. That's a rather big change
from much earlier model runs that once showed good agreement on a
negatively tilted 500 mb trough with subtropic moisture rolling
through. For next week the trend then appears to be the development
of a medium long wave ridge over the eastern Pacific. Moisture from
the subtropics in the western Pacific might reach the West Coast
with warm air advection rain possibly settling southward into the
North Bay next weekend. That's a long way off and definitely subject
to change, but stay tuned the northern hemispheric pattern is still
active with 5 to 6 long wave troughs.

.AVIATION...As of 10:34 AM PDT Friday...For 18z tafs. A deep
marine layer remains in place with extensive low cloud coverage
across the region this morning. Widespread MVFR conditions with
cig heights currently between 1,500 and 2,500 ft AGL. Satellite
does show the beginning signs of some clearing around the SF Bay
Area with VFR conditions expected to develop over the next couple
of hours for most sites. The Monterey Bay region may once again
remain under BKN to OVC conditions through the rest of the day.
Patchy drizzle will remain possible this morning around the
Monterey taf sites though radar has shown a reduction in shower
activity. Generally expecting VFR conditions to develop between
18z-20z. Low clouds currently anticipated to return this evening,
though may not to the extent as last night for the Bay Area sites.
S to SW winds through much of the period at around 10-15 kt,
locally higher gusts this afternoon will be possible.

Vicinity of KSFO...MVFR cigs currently between 2,000 and 2,500 ft
AGL. Satellite shows some signs of dissipation around the south SF
Bay. Expecting VFR conditions around 19z-20z. VFR conditions this
afternoon before low clouds are expected to return late this
evening, but not as robust as this mornings. S to SW 10-15 kt.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...MVFR cigs currently between 1,500 and
2,500 ft AGL. Some lifting may occur this afternoon, though BKN to
OVC conditions are anticipated throughout the rest of the day.
Cigs are then expected to re-lower this evening and overnight.
Locally breezy SW to W winds this afternoon along the coast.

&&

.MARINE...as of 8:17 AM PDT Friday...Generally light to locally
breezy southerly winds are forecast for today with areas near the
Golden Gate gap down to Half Moon Bay and around the Monterey
Peninsula the most likely to experience occasional gusts.
Southerly winds will persist into tomorrow as well before
northwest winds gradually return late this weekend. The first of
two longer period west swells arrives today with an additional
long period southerly swell mixed in through the forecast period.
