Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 447 AM MDT Sat Mar 23 2019 .SYNOPSIS...High pressure will build across the region today. The next storm system will bring widespread precipitation later tonight into Sunday. Warmer weather is in store for the first part of next week. && .SHORT TERM (Through 00Z Wednesday)...Early morning satellite imagery and objective analysis shows shortwave ridging building across the eastern Great Basin. Low level warm advection downstream from this ridge axis continues to fuel showers across northern Utah, however as the ridge axis approaches and subsidence continues to increase this activity should quickly come to an end by mid morning. The next shortwave trough currently approaching the Pacific coast is forecast to move inland today, before ejecting northeast across the far northern Great Basin and Snake River Plain late today through tonight. The trialing and weakening baroclinic zone and associated moisture plume is expected to cross northern Utah and southwest Wyoming tonight through Sunday morning bringing a round of valley rain and mountain snow, although total QPF/snow amounts look to remain on the light side given the fact the upper forcing and cold air aloft all pass well north of the area. Mid level ridging in the wake of this feature is expected to amplify later Sunday into Monday, before the ridge axis shifts east later Monday into Tuesday. The net result in will be a warming and drying trend with temperatures climbing above climo early next week. .LONG TERM (After 00z Wednesday)...Upper level ridging will be present through the beginning of the long term portion of the forecast. A deepening trough is expected to approach the coast Wednesday afternoon. Several waves are expected to eject ahead of this trough later Wednesday into Friday. As an upper level ridge begins to amplify off the Coast Friday afternoon, the back edge of the trough will gradually pull away from the area Saturday. Another period of upper level ridging is expected to impact the area into early next week. Expect the period from Wednesday afternoon to Friday to be unsettled, with periods of precipitation. Temperatures may be cool enough to occasionally drop snow levels to near valley floors mainly later Thursday into Friday. && .AVIATION...Intermittent showers are expected to continue at the SLC terminal through early this morning.
