.SHORT TERM...Winter storm will come in from the west tonight
through Sunday with heaviest snow accumulations in Baker County,
and in Idaho north of the Snake Basin. These areas will be under
a winter storm warning. Lighter amounts will fall in southeast
Oregon and southwest Idaho, and these areas will be under a winter
weather advisory. Latest models have lowered QPF in southern areas,
so snow totals in the Treasure Valley have been lowered to near two
inches, barely enough to qualify for advisory. Wind will become a
problem in southern-most Idaho Saturday, with southeast gusts up to
30 mph cause blowing snow and reduced visibility. Temps will rise
enough for snow to mix with rain near the Snake River Saturday
afternoon, but all snow again Saturday evening. Models still
show instability in southeast Oregon Saturday afternoon and in
southwestern-most Idaho Saturday evening for a slight chance of
thunderstorms in those areas. The main winter storm will end
Sunday from west to east, but more snow is expected Monday as
moisture streams in from the north Pacific around another upper
low off the Washington Coast. That system will also bring
gusty winds especially in Oregon, with areas of blowing snow.
.LONG TERM...Monday night through Friday...
Models still in decent agreement keeping the extended forecast cold
and wintry...at least for a majority of the region. Models continue
to show an upper trough just off the PacNW through midweek. In this
position, eastern Oregon and Idaho's West Central Mountains should
do very well with precipitation. The lower elevations of Idaho may
see limited precipitation due to a sw-ly flow aloft potentially
shadowing out the Treasure and Magic Valley...unless we start to see
sufficient instability develop in the air mass. For now, will
continue the trend of chance POPS in those valleys and higher in the
northern and western areas. That trough begins to slide through the
region by Wednesday, then another system drops south from the Gulf
of Alaska Thursday night and Friday bringing more snow to the
region.

.AVIATION...
Mixture of conditions early this evening with generally VFR across
most of southwest Idaho and MVFR/IFR across eastern Oregon due to
low clouds and snow along with obscured mtns. Deteriorating
conditions expected across Idaho after 09/05z in low clouds and snow
with mountains obscured. Surface winds: SE-SW 10 to 20kts with
higher gusts after 09/12z. Winds aloft near 10kft: S-SW 10 to 20 kts
then increasing to 15 to 30 kts after 09/12z.
Weekend outlook...Widespread snow expected across the entire area
through Sunday for MVFR/IFR conditions. Snow showers decreasing to
scattered in southeast Oregon Sunday afternoon.
