Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 309 PM PDT Thu Mar 21 2019 .SYNOPSIS...Low pressure will continue moving through the Great Basin and showers will be tapering off west to east tonight and Friday. However there is another storm on the heels of this one, which will be cooler, making some valley snow accumulation possible from early Saturday morning through early Sunday. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday. Models are in very good agreement for the short term period. There was some moderate rain in the valleys overnight with some light snow reported around 6500 feet. The east side of the mountains of White Pine County and Elko County continue to get the wrap-around moisture today. Rain across Humboldt County caused an out-of-character rise on Martin Creek and this will need to be monitored for flooding. The current system will exit Friday and another system will move through on Saturday. Tonight through Friday. There could be some impacts during this period. A trough of low pressure will have Nevada in the bullseye to start. Central low pressure will be tracking just south of the LKN HSA this evening and the system will provide wrap-around moisture from an easterly direction through Friday as showers taper off west to east. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for northern Nye, White Pine County and the Ruby Mountains/East Humboldt Range. East-facing slopes above 6500 feet will benefit the most. Some of the higher passes in central Nevada may get accumulating snowfall. High temperatures will generally be in the 50s. Low temperatures will generally be in the 30s. Friday night through Sunday. In between systems, a low-amplitude ridge of high pressure will roll through. Consider yourself lucky if any particular location in northern Nevada sees 6 hours of dry conditions...perhaps up to 12 hours of dry along highway 50 in central Nevada. The next system will begin to spread another round of moisture into western Nevada by Friday evening. A shallow trough of low pressure will produce a cold front on Saturday as it passes through the state. Snow level will drop to near the valley floors with some light snow accumulation in the valleys. Showers will taper off on Sunday. High temperatures will range from the mid 40s to the mid 50s. Low temperatures will generally be in the 30s Friday night and the 20s Saturday night. .LONG TERM...Sunday night through next Thursday. All models are showing a passing upper level system departing northern and central Nevada Sunday night and Monday. In its place, a shortwave ridge axis will move in but quickly depart in the progressive flow. Highs on Monday are expected to be upper 50s to low 60s. Look for increasing clouds through the day with some light showers possible over portions of Humboldt county. Winds are anticipated to be breezy to windy with magnitudes shy of advisory thresholds. The next upper level system is forecast to push into the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday with the possibility of isolated showers across northern Nevada north of I-80. Highs will again be decent with readings in the 50s to low 60s, though passing showers could drop temperatures several degrees. Winds will be breezy in the central part of the forecast area. Overnight lows will be in the mid 30s for the most part. By Wednesday, the upper level system is coming ashore and have went with a blended solution on both Wednesday and Thursday with showers possibly moving into the area. Afternoon highs were lowered slightly as well with readings in the 40s and 50s possible both days. Overnight lows are in the 20s and 30s. && .AVIATION...An active pattern will remain over northern and central Nevada this evening into tomorrow. Passing showers will keep CIGS/VSBY low with IFR/LIFR possible in the heavier showers. Improving conditions will occur during the morning hours tomorrow from west to east. && .HYDROLOGY...Martin Creek in Paradise Valley has responded to recent rainfall with a sharp increase in creek level. This site will bear watching closely over the next several days. Eureka coop received 9 inches, elevation 6430 feet. The town of Eureka suffered sporadic power outages during the night of the heavy snowfall, which was wet and heavy from our observer's observations. Area streets became difficult to near impassable until the next morning.
