Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 905 AM PDT Mon Jul 29 2019 .SYNOPSIS...After one more very hot and dry day today, monsoon moisture will return to northwest Arizona Tuesday followed by a more substantial surge from the Gulf of California Tuesday night and Wednesday. This will bring increased humidity, cloud cover, and chances for showers and thunderstorms back to far southeast California and southern Nevada. A gradual drying trend will again develop going into next weekend. && .UPDATE...Clear skies this morning with the exception of a cloud deck over northern Mohave County that's expected to burn off over the next couple of hours. Current temperature at McCarran is 98F at 9am, so still expecting temperatures and related impacts in the Las Vegas Valley to reach Excessive Heat Warning criteria. Otherwise, forecast today will be dry as the forecast indicates, so no update needed. && .PREV DISCUSSION... 210 AM PDT Mon Jul 29 2019/ .DISCUSSION...Main concerns remain heat today and thunderstorm chances returning Tuesday and beyond. Regarding heat, based on actual highs Sunday and models suggesting temps just a bit higher today, nudged NBM guidance up just a little. This yielded widespread Heat Risk values of 2+ today, with spotty 3s and 4s in the lower elevations. The most well defined area of 3s was centered right over the Las Vegas Valley - also by far the most heavily populated area in our CWA with the greatest impact potential. With this in mind, hoisted an Excessive Heat Warning for today for the Las Vegas area only. This will only be a one day event, as temperatures come down several degrees tomorrow. Regarding thunderstorm chances, as noted by previous shifts, a weak low over the northern Gulf of California today will help push deep moisture up the Colorado River Valley tomorrow, with precipitable water values reaching 1.5 inches as far northwest as Interstate 15 by Wednesday morning. There is decent consensus on nocturnal convection developing Tuesday night in the southern CWA, although exactly where is still in question, leading up to what is expected to be the most active day of the week on Wednesday. The greatest chance of thunderstorms is expected to be over Mohave County, but lesser chances will spread as far west as Rachel, Mount Charleston, and the Mojave National Preserve. Southwest winds will begin to advect drier air in from the west on Thursday, limiting precip chances to Mohave County at least through Saturday. && .AVIATION...After light winds this morning, a push of south to southwest winds is expected today. Moderate confidence in timing, with 16z-18z being the most likely timeframe for increasing winds. Slight chance for light east winds before the southwest winds push in, however it would be short lived and should remain at or less than 8 knots. Wind speeds this afternoon of 10-15 knots gusting near 20 knots likely, with gusts to 25 knots possible. Gusts will diminish this evening with southwest winds around 8kts expected overnight. Gusty winds are expected again Tuesday. Slight chance for southeast wind Tuesday due to distant storms in Arizona. If this does not occur, winds will be south to southwest like today. FEW-SCT high cloud decks will continue for the period. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Breezy south to southwest winds are expected to develop by late morning across much of the region, with speeds of around 15 knots gusting 20-25 knots through the afternoon. Winds should diminish in most areas this evening and overnight. FEW-SCT mid and high clouds will continue through the period.
