Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 424 AM PDT Wed Aug 14 2019 .SYNOPSIS...Dry conditions, sunny skies, and above normal temperatures can be expected through Friday. Heat will reach dangerous levels across portions of the lower elevations in southeast California, southern Nevada, and northwest Arizona today through Friday. Temperatures will come back down closer to normal this weekend as a trough approaches the area. This will also lead to widespread breezy conditions Friday through Sunday.&& .DISCUSSION...Today through next Wednesday. Ridge of high pressure will be overhead today increasing temperatures to dangerous levels. Heat remains the primary concern through Friday before troughiness across the western CONUS suppresses the ridge through the weekend and into early next week. Over the next few days, temperatures will be 8-12 degrees above seasonal normals. As a result, an Excessive Heat Warning will be in effect from 8AM today through 8PM Friday for the lower elevations of Clark and Mohave County, southeastern San Bernardino, the lower Colorado River Valley, and Death Valley. Peak heating is expected Thursday across the region, and even across portions of Lincoln County where a Heat Advisory will be in effect 8AM Thursday through 8PM Friday, where abnormally warm temperatures will be possible. As a trough begins to dive across the northern Great Basin region Friday, breezy to gusty winds will increase in response to the increased pressure gradients. Additional weak shortwaves will dig across the region through the weekend keeping breezy afternoon winds around and further suppressing the expansive ridge to the southeast, allowing temperatures to dip to slightly above normals. Through Monday and into Tuesday, the ridge will begin to shift back across Arizona increasing temperatures again by the middle of next week. As far as monsoon moisture goes, no clear signals point to the return of moisture over the next 7 days. Though, medium range ensembles indicate possible increase in moisture across northwest AZ by late next week, but details are unclear this far out. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Another day of light winds expected with minimal impacts to the terminal other than easterly winds during the afternoon hours. Winds stayed southeasterly yesterday until about 05Z and expect similar timing again today per latest models. After 05Z tonight, a shift to a southwest orientation but remaining generally below 10 kts. Skies will remain SKC throughout the TAF period. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Minimal impacts expected again today as high pressure dominates the region resulting in light winds for the majority of the region. KDAG will follow this trend with the exception of an surge in southwest wind gusts late tonight for a few hours. Otherwise, no other significant weather impacts to terminals expected.
