Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 840 PM PDT Wed Apr 24 2019 .SYNOPSIS... Dominant high pressure will allow temperatures to continue to rise through Friday; reaching near daily record high temperatures over the next couple of days. A few showers and storms will be possible each afternoon through Friday across the southern Great Basin and southern Sierra. The ridge will be replaced by an incoming low pressure system from the Pacific late this weekend into early next week. This will begin a decreasing trend in temperatures and an increase in chances for showers and storms across the area. && .UPDATE...Another quiet evening across much of the forecast area. Satellite/radar shows some light shower activity in the NW portion of the CWA producing brief, locally gusty winds over 40 mph. No updates needed at this time. && .PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...307 PM PDT... .DISCUSSION...Today through Tuesday. High pressure will remain strong over the region today and tomorrow before a series of weak waves moving across the PacNW and a second incoming Pacific trough weaken the ridge as it shifts eastward Friday into the weekend. The pattern will result in periods of breezy conditions and a generous warming trend through Saturday with high temps reaching well above seasonal normals each day. High temps Thursday and Friday will be within reach of the daily records in a few areas including Las Vegas. Underneath this ridge, low level moisture located over central Nevada and the higher elevations of Inyo County combined with warm sfc temperatures will lead to some low-end instability each afternoon through Saturday in these areas. These ingredients will support a few isolated showers and even a few rumbles of thunder in our far northern areas of the southern Great Basin as well as over the Sierra and White Mtns. Thursday looks to be the best day to see slightly higher coverage of these showers and storms which could potentially reach as far south as the AZ Strip and the higher elevations of Clark County. On Sunday, the effects of the next incoming low pressure system will begin to show themselves as this system draws nearer to the southern California coast. Winds coming up slightly and temperatures beginning a decreasing trend can be expected Sunday into Monday. This system will move onshore Sunday night into Monday spreading chances for showers and storms across portions of southern Nevada, southeast California, and northwest Arizona. This trough will become embedded in a larger trough digging southward from the Pac Northwest across the Great Basin Monday into Tuesday. This will keep temps on a trend closer to seasonal averages and as well as potential for some continued rain chances. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Drainage southwest winds will replace the variable winds later this evening. Similar to today, light winds are expected Thursday morning, favoring a east to southeast direction. During the late afternoon Thursday, a push of southwest winds around 10-14 knots will develop and continue through the evening. VFR conditions expected with a few mid and high clouds passing at times. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Light winds following typical diurnal trends will continue this evening and through Thursday morning. South to southwest winds will develop Thursday afternoon, with speeds 10-20 knots and gusts around 20-30 knots. Dry conditions and no operationally significant clouds expected. && .CLIMATE...
