A strong shortwave trough pushed through the area out of northeastern New Mexico and the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. With southwest flow aloft and moist southeast flow near the surface, a large area of precipitation developed and quickly changed to snow. Locations closer to Interstate 70 reported widespread 5 to 9 inches of snowfall.

Snowfall was heaviest from Hays into the northeast part of the county. The largest amount reported was 9 inches at a location 4 miles northeast of Hays. In general amounts were less than 3 inches across the south half of Ellis county and more than 6 inches across the northern part of the county.
