Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 217 AM MST Wed Jan 9 2019 .SHORT TERM...Today through Friday night. Widespread mid and upper level clouds over the forecast area this morning ahead of a sharp upper trough in the Pacific. A low-level warm overrunning pattern is taking shape over the Magic Valley, but little or no precip is expected to reach the ground until after 18Z. By then, we will have better mixing. Would not be surprised to see some valley locations see pockets of freezing rain this morning. The main thrust of moisture will be to the north, where the Central Mountains may see some snowfall today. GFS presents a wetter solution tonight and tomorrow for much of the Snake Plain, while the NAM is much drier. With the ECMWF a little more in agreement with the GFS, went a little wetter with the PoPs. Much of the weather clears on Thursday, but plentiful low-level moisture remains based on forecast soundings and time-height diagrams. This may set the stage for freezing drizzle in the Snake Plain Thursday and Friday. Hinsberger .LONG TERM...Saturday through next Wednesday. The models continue to hold a blocking pattern over the region next weekend. It is evolving more toward an Omega Block, which tend to hold a little longer. That said, we should see that breaking down early next week. Before that, expect inversion conditions to develop with some stratus and patchy fog especially Saturday morning. We also trended temperatures up or down depending on elevation to reflect the expected inversion. The With the expected blocking pattern, the models are again pushing off the onset of any precipitation until Monday and any impactful moisture until Tuesday or Wednesday. Considering the vast amount of uncertainty due the breakdown of the pattern, we didn't push the chance of snow next week too high at this point. Keyes && .AVIATION...As a warm front continues to push across eastern Idaho, we are seeing some light precipitation trying to develop and shift northeast. We stress trying as a lot of it is NOT reaching the ground. All we are really seeing is VFR with the potential of MVFR ceilings at times through the day. That said, IF we get moisture to fall at a particular TAF site it most likely will be light snow. There is an outside chance especially earlier in the day it could briefly be freezing drizzle at BYI, IDA or PIH. The likelihood of that is not high but can't be ruled out for now. As winds have picked up off the surface this morning, we are likely going to be running into LLWS issues for BYI, PIH and even SUN. By this afternoon, there is a better chance of seeing at least VCSH for SUN. Keyes && .PIH WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... None. &&
