Showers and a few storms are developing over the western interior and over Miami-Dade County early this afternoon. The showers and storms will continue to develop over the interior and east coast metro areas through the afternoon bringing gusty winds to the taf sites. The shower and storm activity should end around 00Z tonight keeping all of the taf sites dry. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 1043 AM EDT Wed Jun 12 2019/ ..HEAT INDICES GETTING UP TO AROUND 105 OVER THE EAST COAST METRO AREAS THIS AFTERNOON... ..SOME STRONG STORMS POSSIBLE EASTERN AREAS THIS AFTERNOON... UPDATE... A frontal boundary located over Northern Florida into the Northern Gulf of Mexico will remain nearly stationary. This will keep South Florida in a south to southwest steering flow this afternoon letting the west coast sea breeze push eastward across the area while the east coast sea breeze remains near the east coast metro areas. There is also some drier air in the mid to upper levels of the atmosphere over South Florida today. This will limit the coverage of the showers and thunderstorms, but the storms could be stronger over the east coast metro areas due to the drier air. Therefore, the HWO product will mention gusty winds, hail, and heavy rainfall over the interior and east coast metro areas for this afternoon. The best coverage will be over the northeast areas of South Florida for this afternoon into early this evening. The forecast high temps for this afternoon has also been raised a little bit to the lower to mid 90s over the eastern areas, due to the less coverage of the showers and thunderstorms. This will also allow for the heat indices to get up closer to the 105 degrees over the east coast metro areas for this afternoon. Rest of the forecast looks good at this time and no other changes are planned. && PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 727 AM EDT Wed Jun 12 2019/ AVIATION... Isolated to scattered showers over the west coast metro areas will slowly dissipate through the morning hours, as scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms develop over the interior and east coast metro areas this afternoon. A few of the storms could become strong with gusty winds, hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall. && PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 304 AM EDT Wed Jun 12 2019/ DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM (Today-Thursday): The persistent, elongated shortwave that has lingered over the eastern Gulf has begun to push eastward and will slowly become absorbed by a longwave trough amplifying across the TN/OH River Valley. Another southern stream shortwave southwest of the longwave trough is noted on water vapory imagery traversing across TX. As these upper level features trek eastward, models depict a surface low developing along a frontal boundary that has remained stationary to our north across the FL panhandle and extending into the southeastern CONUS. The upper level troughing, along with it's corresponding surface low, will depart towards the NE through the latter portion of the week. In the wake of this departure, an attendant cold front will begin sliding down the Florida peninsula before stalling across Central Florida. This set up will keep south to southwesterly flow in place, pooling moisture ahead of the boundary. Resulting from the return of deeper moisture, models display the increase of PWATs back above 2.0" across the region. The prevailing south- southwesterly wind regime should also keep temperatures a few degrees above normal with heat indices exceeding 100 degrees at times across South Florida. All of this coupled together will support scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms favoring the interior and east coast in the forecast each afternoon. LONG TERM (Friday-Tuesday): The pattern aloft looks to become a bit more zonal to our north by Friday and into the weekend. This will aid in dissolving the aforementioned stationary front across Central Florida. Surface ridging looks to build to our north behind the front, veering winds back out of the east and southeast and allowing the return of the east coast sea breeze. Lingering moisture should remain sufficient enough to provide plentiful buoyancy for afternoon convection to develop along the sea breeze and resultant outflow boundaries. With the return of the easterly flow, coverage of showers and storms should shift back across the interior during initiation and then push towards the west coast. Temperatures also look to moderate down a few degrees to near normal with the change in wind direction. Despite this, portions of the interior and west coast could still experience heat indices in the triple digits. MARINE... Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue across the coastal waters through the forecast period. Frequent lightning, gusty winds, and locally higher seas are possible near the strongest storms. Otherwise, boating conditions should remain relatively benign with seas below 2 ft and light south to southwesterly winds becoming easterly by the weekend. AVIATION... Convection has trended down tonight with some remnant light showers around APF winding down. Another round of afternoon showers and storms is expected to develop again on Wednesday with a focus over the interior and east coast. Sub-VFR conditions possible with brief bouts of IFR possible at directly impacted terminals.
