.UPDATE...
The mid to upper level trough of low pressure will remain nearly
stationary over the Eastern Gulf of Mexico as high pressure
remains over the Central Atlantic waters. This will keep a light
steering flow in a south/southwest direction over South Florida
for today along with the deep tropical moisture. This will also
allow for the west coast sea breeze to push eastward across the
region keeping the east coast sea breeze over the east coast metro
areas. Therefore, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms
are expected today over South Florida with the best coverage over
the western areas in the morning shifting to the eastern areas in
the afternoon and evening.
A few of the storms could become strong this afternoon with gusty
winds especially over the eastern areas where the sea breezes
collide. This will be mention in the morning HWO package.
HYDROLOGY...
The PWAT values from MIA sounding this morning is still around
2.2 inches,and the short range models are showing these PWAT
values remaining over South Florida for rest of today. These PWAT
values are in the 90 to 95th percentile range for this time of
year. This means that there could be heavy rainfall with any of
the showers or thunderstorms today over South Florida. With the
grounds becoming saturated from the previous rains the last couple
of days and the potential of heavy rainfall today over South
Florida, a Flood Watch has been issued for all of South Florida
through 8 PM EDT this evening. For more information on the

Rest of the forecast looks good at this time and no other changes
are planned.

The steering flow will be south/southwest again but around 5 kts. This
should allow for the east coast sea breezes to develop today and remain
over the east coast metro areas. Therefore, most of the east coast taf
sites will be southwest around 5 KTS this morning becoming southerly
this afternoon. The only exception is at KFLL where it should go more
south/southeast this afternoon. KAPF taf site will remain southwest
around 5 to 10 kts today. VCSH this morning going to VCTS in afternoon
with tempo group of IVR conditions between 18Z and 20Z for east coast
taf sites. KAPF taf site VCTS until 15Z then VCSH.

.Another wet, stormy day ahead for South Florida...
DISCUSSION...
Monday: The unsettled pattern continues with the mid to upper
level trough pushing over the eastern Gulf of Mexico towards
Florida today. At the surface, the clockwise flow around the
Atlantic ridge of high pressure will allow for another
light southwesterly to southerly wind day. The flow regime will
allow sea breezes to develop with the Gulf one advancing inland.
The Atlantic sea breeze will once again be pinned closer to the
coast which will act as a boundary to focus afternoon convection
over the east coast metro area again today. The hydrology section
below will dive into more details on today's heavy rainfall threat
but the presence of precipitable water (PWAT) values above 2
inches remains noteworthy even for August.
A few surface boundaries of note this morning observable on radar
include a trough sitting along the east coast from northern
Broward County into the Atlantic waters off Palm Beach County.
Another boundary sits off the Collier coast as well this morning.
Both of these boundaries will serve as a focus for convection this
morning including the potential for waterspouts as steep low
level lapse rates and light flow remain. As the morning continues,
these initiating boundaries for convection will shift from over
the waters to over land as the sea breeze circulation develops.
Temperatures aloft remain warm but the potential of strong storms
with gusty winds, frequent lightning, locally heavy rain, and
funnel clouds will exist again today.
Tuesday through Thursday: As the mid-level trough pushes across
the peninsula of Florida on Tuesday before exiting into the
Atlantic on Wednesday, the unsettled pattern will continue. The
surface ridge will shift accordingly with a southerly to
southeasterly wind component returning which should shift
convection further west into the interior and towards Southwest
Florida. Slightly cooler air entering aloft could lead to stronger
storms along with an uptick in lightning activity compared to the
previous few days.
Friday through Sunday: As high pressure develops aloft over Texas
to close out the forecast period, the trough will once again
settle over the southeastern United States and amplify into
Florida. The surface ridge of high pressure will build in from the
Atlantic with southerly to southwesterly flow returning over the
region. This will shift the rainfall and storm focus back east
towards the east coast metro.
MARINE...
Generally benign weather outside of convection. Surface wind flow
will be determined mainly by small shifts in the Atlantic ridge
of high pressure. Convection will be capable of producing gusty
winds, locally higher seas, waterspouts, locally heavy rainfall,
and lightning.
HYDROLOGY...
Existing ground saturation and storm movement will play key roles
in today's risk of flooding. Have decided to withhold issuing a
Flood Watch at this time due to a decent amount of time for
Sunday's rainfall to drain and the improving situation along the
coast with tides receding with each successive high tide cycle.
While the Flash Flood Guidance continues to improve, we must keep
in mind that some portions of the east coast metro that saw over
2-3 inches of rainfall on Sunday (like portions of southeastern
Broward County) could once again see locally heavy rainfall
amounts today. The next shift could revisit this decision and
issue a short-fused Flood Watch for today if an excessive rainfall
threat were to emerge.

AVIATION...
Mainly VFR will continue through 14-15Z, but a few showers could
still bring -RA at times. Another round of showers and storms is
expected this afternoon with possible MVFR/IFR periods. Big
challenge today is anticipating a potential sea breeze and onset.
Models are not aggressive in developing onshore flow, keeping
mainly prevailing SW synoptic flow. But overall winds should
remain light enough to allow for at least an onshore component
over the Atlantic coast, even if it is mainly SSW in nature. The
Atlantic TAFS reflect this scenario after 18Z, with winds around
8kt.

WPTV broadcast video on social media of water approaching businesses and cars stranded on Lake Worth Road near Congress Ave from road flooding. 3 to 4.5 inches fell across the area in a 90 minute period.
