Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1015 AM PDT Tue Aug 20 2019 .SYNOPSIS...Mostly sunny skies and dry conditions are likely through the weekend. Winds will be on the decrease but temperatures will be on the increase through the middle of the week. After that, temperatures will retreat only a few degrees through the weekend. && .UPDATE...No major changes to the previous forecast for this afternoon. Current temperatures are comparable yesterday at this hour, however with sunny skies and slightly drier air in place, we should still come out a few degrees warmer than yesterdays high temperatures across the region. && .PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...301 AM PDT Tue Aug 20 2019 .DISCUSSION...through next Monday. At least for Las Vegas, you have to go back to 2010 to find a drier start to the Monsoon. Since July 1, our station at McCarran International Airport has reported 0.04". Back in 2010, it was only a Trace. Today-Thursday: Strong ridge centered over New Mexico and the southern High Plains still progged to shift west across southern Arizona, southern California and northwest Mexico in the coming days. High center is slightly further south due to models showing a stronger trough moving through the Pacific Northwest Wednesday night into Thursday. Made no change to our Excessive Heat Warning, although the High Heat Risk area not as expansive as a few days ago. Greatest area of high heat risk today is confined to the Colorado River Valley and southern Mohave County. That area expands to include parts of southeast California and southern Nevada Wednesday. Area shrinks back to include the Las Vegas Valley, Colorado River and southern Mohave County Thursday. Friday-Monday: Dry conditions and above normal temperatures look to continue into early next week under a dominate area of high pressure. && .FIRE WEATHER...Dry conditions with above normal temperatures will continue through the week. Minimum humidities will likely continue to drop into the single digits in the afternoons with poor recovery overnight. There will be a shallow increase in low level moisture into southeast California and southern Mohave County Friday and beyond leading to better humidity recovery. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Yesterday, southerly wind speeds did not perform as well as anticipated. Due to a similar pattern setting up today, can expect a similar story...light and variable through the early morning hours before transitioning southerly for the remainder of the afternoon. This will result in south-southeasterly winds 5-7 knots from 15-21z before south-southwesterly winds take hold with speeds 10-15 kts until sunset. Light west-southwesterly winds should persist through the overnight hours. No operationally significant cloud cover expected through the TAF period. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Light and variable winds will continue through the early morning hours before southerly winds with speeds 7-12 kts expected through the remainder of the evening. Light south- southwesterly winds expected to continue through the overnight hours. The exception to this remains KDAG, which can expect west- northwesterly winds 8-12 kts through the TAF period.
