Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tallahassee FL
916 PM EDT Sat Aug 31 2019
.UPDATE...
No updates were needed to the forecast this evening. East to
eastnortheast flow will continue over the region through the
night time hours. Shower activity is expected to diminish with
mostly quiet weather expected overnight. Some patchy fog is
possible east of Tallahassee but coverage will be low given the
elevated easterly flow at the surface overnight. Mostly clear
skies this evening will give way to cloudy conditions by daybreak.

.PREV DISCUSSION [747 PM EDT]...
.NEAR TERM [Through Tonight]...
Widespread showers have developed basically everywhere except for
areas around Tallahassee east into the Big Bend. Thunderstorms
should be forming soon. A strong storm or two is possible given the
mid level dry air and the shortwave moving in from the east. Did go
ahead and bump up pops from about 0-3z. With the west-northwest
winds aloft the thunderstorm activity over SE AL and SW GA should
drift southwest throughout the evening. By 3-4z, shower and storm
activity should diminish over land with a mostly dry night ahead.
Lows will be in the lower to mid 70s.
.SHORT TERM [Sunday Through Monday Night]...
In the upper levels a ridge will be over the Western U.S. and a
trough will be over the Eastern U.S. At the surface easterly winds
will become northeasterly as Hurricane Dorian approaches the
Florida Peninsula. High pressure will move into the Southeast on
Monday. With easterly flow POPs will be moderate at 30 to 50
percent tomorrow. On Monday drier air will move in from the north
and POPs will be lower at 10 to 40 percent with the best chances
of showers and thunderstorms in the FL Big Bend and Valdosta area.
Highs will be around 90 or in the lower 90s. Lows will be in the
lower 70s.
.LONG TERM [Tuesday Through Saturday]...
The latest forecasts for Hurricane Dorian from the National
Hurricane Center have been trending eastward away from the local
area. While we still shouldn't let our guard completely down, the
chances of impactful weather from Dorian occurring in our forecast
area are currently decreasing. In fact, with northerly flow on the
west side of the system, a fairly dry airmass is expected across
most of the area with only low chances of afternoon showers and
thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to be a bit above average
with highs in the low to mid 90s and overnight lows in the low to
mid 70s.
.AVIATION...
[Through 00Z Monday]
A mixture of MVFR/IFR ceilings are expected to fill in across the
region overnight. Restrictions will be slow to clear tomorrow
morning, with showers and thunderstorms possible at each terminal
tomorrow afternoon.
.MARINE...
Moderate easterly winds will become northeasterly tomorrow night.
Winds and seas will be moderate all week with Small Craft Exercise
Caution conditions (15 to 20 knots) likely. The chances of Hurricane
Dorian directly impacting the area are currently decreasing as
forecasts continue to trend eastward away from the area.
.FIRE WEATHER...
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible on Sunday with
winds generally out of the northeast. Transport winds will be around
15 MPH with surface winds around 5 MPH. Winds will be slightly
higher on Monday leading to dispersion values above 75 across the
area. Otherwise, no fire weather concerns. Fog is not expected.
.HYDROLOGY...
Local rivers are mostly steady or falling. Forecast rainfall totals
through Thursday are 1 to 1.5 inches in the FL Big Bend and South
Central Georgia. The forecast track for Hurricane Dorian has shifted
eastward. No impacts are expected at this time. However there is
still some uncertainty with the track. We will continue to monitor
the forecast track for changes that could impact the region. The
region will most likely be on the "dry" west side of Dorian so
flooding is not expected at this time.
.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
Spotter activation is not requested. However, spotters are always
encouraged to safely report significant weather conditions when they
occur by calling the office or tweeting us @NWSTallahassee.
