NWS Baltimore/Washington wrote its last area forecast discussion before the first event at Aug 12, 8:48 PM EST, 2 hours 12 minutes earlier.
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC 948 PM EDT Sun Aug 12 2018 .SYNOPSIS... A broad low pressure system will impact the region over the next several days with unsettled weather conditions expected. High pressure and upper level ridging will take hold toward the middle of the week bringing drier conditions. A cold front will approach from the west toward the end of the work week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/... Moderate to heavy rainfall, associated with dissipating thunderstorms, continue up and down along the Chesapeake Bay areas this evening. Additional moderate showers exist along the Potomac Highland ridges in western Maryland and parts of eastern West Virginia. This activity is nearly stationary. As for the remainder of the night, cooler temperatures aloft, some modest wind shear and high PW's could promote additional showers and thunderstorms overnight into early Monday. Coverage is low confidence and expected intensity may not reach severe criteria. However; any additional development of these showers and thunderstorms could pose another threat for some localized flooding. If the rain comes down hard enough and fast enough, then flash flooding could be a problem. Some of the computer models indicate an increase in shower and thunderstorm coverage along the Chesapeake Bay zones from southern Maryland to northeast Maryland overnight. Some of the high resolution models aren't as generous to create such heavy rainfall. Either way, based on the scenario of a cold-core upper low over the eastern Ohio Valley moving eastward, upper level energy pivoting around the base of this low into the mid-Atlantic region, an abundance of moisture present and some wind energy, we are considering looking at the computer models as a consensus and potentially issuing a Flash Flood Watch for a large portion of the eastern two-thirds of our CWA. There is still some uncertainty with this, but a good signal indicates we may see additional development of showers and a few thunderstorms in these zones overnight into early Monday. Lows tonight will be in the 60s to near 70. The upper level energy should clear the CWA by Monday afternoon, meaning that the intensity of the strongest thunderstorms may weaken to more of a stratiform rainfall, while additional showers develop with smaller waves of energy later Monday afternoon. Highs Monday will reach the lower 80s. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/... Things appear likely to start slowly improving starting Monday night through Tuesday night. The upper low will slowly push north of the CWA late Monday night, then continue moving northeast away from the region Tuesday and Tuesday night. While additional shortwave energy may continue rotating across the area, forcing aloft will be weaker to the south and southwest of the upper low as shortwaves will be more positively oriented, so coverage and intensity of showers and t-storms should not be as great Tuesday as they will be today and Monday. With increasing sunshine, we will likely start to warm up on Tuesday with highs reaching slightly higher than Monday. Lows both Monday night and Tuesday night will be in the 60s for the most part. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Mainly dry conditions are anticipated for Wednesday as upper low moves away from our region and surface high pressure/ ridging builds into our area. Dry conditions are expected to continue into early Thursday as a humid air mass builds over us ahead of an approaching cold front. Guidance diverts on their solutions for Thursday with GFS bringing afternoon showers/thunderstorms over our CWA while the Euro is drier. As the front crossed our CWA on Friday, the chance of showers and thunderstorms increases over our area. The front will stall to our south late on Friday and into the weekend as upper level trough axis pushes east over the Mid-Atlantic. This will keep the chances of showers and thunderstorms through the weekend, especially towards the southern part of our CWA. && .AVIATION /02Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... While the showers and thunderstorms have ended at the terminals with exception to a few showers or sprinkles near the BWI and MTN terminals, we anticipate additional showers to develop overnight into Monday morning. Coverage and intensity gives us low confidence. Predominate VFR conditions overnight with patchy fog once again an issue. With an upper level low just to our west, daily showers and thunderstorms will persist through Tuesday. Better coverage of showers/storms will result for IAD/DCA/BWI/MTN on Monday as the upper trough and favorable atmospheric ingredients shift further east than today. Episodes of sub VFR VIS/CIGs will be likely. Patchy fog at night will again impact terminals where rainfall has been received. Winds will remain light at 10 knots or less, favoring a north northeasterly trajectory. VFR conditions are expected for Wednesday into Thursday with high pressure in control. Periods of sub-VFR conditions are possible late Thursday into Friday for possible showers and thunderstorms due to a frontal boundary. && .MARINE... Sub SCA conditions forecast through Tuesday as a broad area of low pressure resides over the waters. Monday will carry the highest coverage of showers/storms over the waters. Ensure you have a way to receive Special Marine Warnings if travelling by boat the next several days. Wind gusts are expected to remain below SCA conditions Wednesday and Thursday as high pressure is in control. Showers and thunderstorms may return late Thursday into Friday due to a front. Breezy conditions possible but uncertain as to if the small craft criteria will be reached. && .HYDROLOGY... Rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected to become focused to the eastern zones late this evening, then possible redevelopment in any zone overnight into Monday morning. Showers and any additional thunderstorms overnight into Monday will bring about another Flash Flood threat later tonight and Monday, which is why we may be considering issuing a Flash Flood Watch for overnight through Monday evening. Confidence in coverage is low, but we have been so saturated recently. && .TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
