A north to northeast wind will continue through Wednesday afternoon at speeds generally less than 10 knots. The wind will gradually veer to the east/southeast Wednesday evening once surface high pressure builds to the east. 79 && .SHORT TERM... /Issued 310 PM CDT Tue Jul 31 2018/ /Tonight/ A quiet and relatively cool night is in store for North and Central Texas as the area remains underneath dry northerly flow aloft on the back side of a deep latitudinal longwave trough over the Mississippi Valley. The surface cold front that came through this morning is now headed for the Upper Texas Coast. In wake of the cold front, pleasant dew point temperatures(for this time of year) in the 50s to lower 60s have arrived into the area. Current northerly winds 15 mph with gusts 20-25 mph will diminish rapidly this evening, as the dry boundary layer decouples and cools after sunset. Lows in the mid-upper 60s will be commonplace across rural areas, with slightly warmer low temperatures in the lower 70s within the immediate heat-island areas of the DFW Metroplex. Current scattered, fair-weather cumulus clouds should dissipate as well by nightfall and provide clear conditions overnight. 05/ && .LONG TERM... /Issued 310 PM CDT Tue Jul 31 2018/ /Wednesday through Tuesday/ Although the northerly winds at the surface will not be as strong tomorrow, they will continue in the low to mid levels through the rest of the work week. This will keep a fairly dry and an unusually cool low level thermal profile in place for early August. As a result, temperatures will remain a degree or two below normal through Friday despite the abundant sunshine. By late Friday and into the weekend the upper level trough over the Mississippi Valley weakens and our more typical southerly winds will resume and bring us a very gradual return of moisture and warmer temperatures. Still, this flow off of the Gulf of Mexico will keep high temperatures from getting too hot and this forecast doesn't feature a return of 100s until Monday and beyond. Next week the upper level high begins to build over the region so temperatures do look like they'll get a little hotter, but no major heat waves look likely this time around. However, with the higher Gulf of Mexico moisture some 105+ heat indices should return to areas along and east of I-35 by Monday or Tuesday. Rainfall prospects look bleak through the period. While we'll have to keep an eye on convection originating in the High Plains through the weekend, the air mass will likely be too dry and stable to support convection surviving long enough to make it into our CWA. By early next week, the increasing moisture from the Gulf may favor a slight chance of afternoon convection in the southeastern zones, particularly on Monday when a weak tropical wave moves ashore. Fire weather is likely to become more of a concern by early next week along and west of I-35 due to the stronger winds of 10-15 mph in the afternoon.
