An unusually deep upper trough for July over the eastern U.S. extending all the way south to the Gulf Coast provided the setting for widespread shower and thunderstorm activity. Radar estimated rainfall of 2 to 4 inches in about 3 hours was observed across west central Rockingham County with a small area estimated at 4 to 6 inches between Intelligence and Mayodan. The annual recurrence interval of the heaviest rain approached 200-year (.005 annual exceedance probability) in a 3-hour period per NOAA Atlas 14.

Eden COOP (EDEN7) had 2.10 for the wettest July 25th on record with rainfall data back to 1950.
A CoCoRaHS station at Eden 2.3 ENE measured 3.84 inches for the 24-hours ending 7 AM on July 25th.
A sinkhole formed and the road was badly damaged along North Carolina Route 135/311 where heavy rain occurred and runoff flowed across the road. The flooding was aggravated by a water main break under the road. Damage estimate per NC DOT. A water rescue also occurred where one person was stranded in a vehicle that was halfway submerged near the intersection of MacGregor Lane and River Road.
