.SYNOPSIS...
A major coastal low will impact the area through Saturday
morning. High pressure then builds in for the second half of
the weekend with another coastal storm possible for the middle
of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 9 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 08Z: Explosive cyclogenesis occurring centered approximately
100 miles SSE of Fire Island NY or just south of NOAA Buoy
44066 with a central pressure of 987 hPa. Left exit region of
the 150+ KT Jet over NC driving the system. Latest near-term NWP
(RAP and HRRR) indicate another 10 hPa SFC PRES drop in the
next 6 hours (14Z). Thus 970 hPA low seen in the 06Z GEM at 18Z
could verify! Heavy rainfall with KJFK at 1.23" so far. Flood
advisories in affect for most of the region. Snow now across
western Orange County as temps fall into the lower 30s. Winds
gusting up to 40 mph already along the coast of Long Island (43
mph gust at Shinnecock Inlet and 44 mph at Napeague).

Winds will slowly back this morning as the low intensifies and cold
advection occurs. Dew points temperatures in the LAMP guidance may
be a good indicator of air temperature. Wet snow mix will continue
to work its way west and will likely be approaching the NY Metro (as
temps fall into the mid 30s) by mid morning.

Rainfall continues at the quarter inch per hour rate.  Will likely
added SE Connecticut into the Urban/Small stream flood advisories
shortly.

.SHORT TERM /9 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
Some changes made with the fcst this mrng.

The first is the expansion of the high wind wrng to the entire
area minus Putnam, Orange and wrn Passaic. In addition to this,
peak gusts have been increased across ern LI and ern CT to 70
mph.

The second change was to upgrade the winter weather advy for
wrn Passaic to a wrng. Snowfall totals in general were increased
for Orange and wrn Passaic.

An approximately 975 low is progged to be roughly 50 to 100
miles w of the benchmark at 18z. The 00Z RGEM/GFS/ECMWF, 3Z SREF
and 6Z NAM make up this grouping. The further wwd trend has
increased the wind threat, but has not made the snow/rain fcst
any less complicated.

While the cooling airmass associated with the upr low evidenced
by decreasing wet bulb zero heights remains a crucial component,
the wwd trend brings warmer air aloft in as well. Because of
these two factors, snowfall totals have been lowered from
roughly the Hudson River ewd, and increased elsewhere. Over a
foot of snow is now expected for some of the higher elevations
in Orange county.

Significant changes in snow amounts for the entire area are
possible with such little room for error thermally. The time
period thru noon will be critical for getting a handle of how
the rain/snow line is progressing.

The pcpn is progged to taper off after roughly 10pm. That final
deformation zone band could produce at least a coating of snow
even on LI, as nighttime occurrence will help.

With the storm about 550 miles se of Montauk 18z Sat, the fcst
dries out quickly on but the brisk flow will continue.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The pressure gradient will begin to slacken Saturday night into
Sunday, with most areas seeing winds diminishing, however
eastern Long Island could still see gusts up to 25 kt on Sunday.

High pressure then builds down moving into the northeast for the
rest of the weekend before weakening on Tuesday.

There is potential for another coastal storm to develop next week,
with both the 12Z GFS and the Euro indicating another low
developing off the Mid-Atlantic coast Tuesday night into
Wednesday. However, there are differences in the upper level
pattern leading to a lot of uncertainty at this time. The
precipitation type looks to be a combination of rain and snow
but will depend on strength, speed and location of this system.

.AVIATION /10Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Deepening low pressure south of Long Island remains through today
then tracks to the south and east tonight into Saturday.

IFR in rain and fog, with brief periods of MVFR through 12Z as
ceilings remain variable.

A rain/snow mix develops at KSWF around 12Z becoming all snow early
this afternoon. A transition to a rain/snow mix continues to the
coast this afternoon. Four to six inches of snow is possible at KSWF
with little accumulations at the remainder of the terminals.

NE winds back to northerly early this morning, and increase. Winds
remain N/NW and continue to increase into this afternoon, reaching
peak sustained and gust levels after 19Z, then diminish this
evening. LLWS remains likely later this morning into this evening.

.Sunday-Monday...VFR.
.Tuesday...VFR with rain possible late or at night.

.MARINE...
Storm force winds thru tngt decrease to gale on Sat. There could
be a few gusts to hurricane force, particularly on the ern
ocean, this aftn and eve.

Gale force winds are still anticipated on the waters east of
Moriches inlet Saturday night. Overall, winds will be trending down
at this point as the coastal low pulls further offshore. SCA
criteria wind gusts will then extend into Monday, before falling
below criteria Monday night. Ocean seas will likely remaining at SCA
levels throughout the period.

.HYDROLOGY...
Two to four inches of rain/liquid equivalent are forecast with
the storm. Higher amounts are possible with this event
depending on where banded precipitation sets up. A Flood Watch
remains in effect for most of the area. Flooding of smaller
streams and rivers is possible. Poor drainage and urban
flooding will continue. Coastal flooding may enhance the flood
threat.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A powerful coastal storm will impact the region through
Saturday Night with 24-36 hrs of N-NE gale to storm force
winds. Impacts could even linger into Sunday as the powerful
storm slowly departs. Generally 1 to 1 1/2 ft of surge is needed
for minor flooding and 2 to 2 1/2 ft for moderate flooding
during the high tide cycles today and tonight.

Surge guidance has come into good agreement with moderate
coastal flood thresholds being reached along the southern bays
of Nassau County and Jamaica Bay this morning. Elsewhere
generally minor to locally moderate coastal impacts expected.

There is still quite a bit of model spread for tonight's high
tidal cycle, with competing factors of increasing energetic
easterly swells and Ekman pumping versus strong offshore winds.
A middle of the road approach continues, with a moderate
coastal flood threat for all the waters surrounding Long Island
and lower New York Harbor. Elsewhere,the strong offshore flow
should limits impacts to generally minor to locally moderate.

With Saturday into Saturday Night high tidal cycles, the most
widespread potential for moderate coastal flooding exists. this
as Ekman pumping and energetic easterly swell energy along with
weakening offshore flow should help water levels continue to
build along the coast. Localized major coastal flooding is a low
to moderate possibility for the south shore bays during
Saturday morning and night high tides. NOTE: For those with
concerns along the bays areas, water levels may linger well
after high tides.

A minor to moderate coastal flooding threat will likely continue
into Sunday morn/aft high tides.

Finally, the USGS Coastal Hazard Viewer conitnues to depict
potential for a prolonged threat for areas of dune erosion and
localized washovers Sat thru Mon.

Confidence and clarity on local coastal impact details for
Friday Night into Saturday Night should increase today, so
continue to monitor subsequent forecasts for the latest.

At 651 am, a trained spotter reported a tree down at 9W and Treack Road in Nyack. In Tappan at 1117 am, the Department of Highways reported a tree down on the Palisades Parkway, southbound south of NY 303. The broadcast media reported a downed tree blocking Route 9 West at Main Street and Hastings Lane in Stony Point at 1220 pm. Later in the day, at 535 pm, broadcast media reported a tree down on a house and car on School street in Upper Nyack. Power was knocked out in the neighborhood.

At Westchester Airport, a gust to 64 was reported at 229 pm. The Department of Highways reported downed wires and a power pole on NY100 at 837 am. All lanes were closed. Around 946 am, a tree was knocked doen in Sleepy Hollow on US 9 southbound. At 120 pm, a large tree fell onto a house in Ossining. The broadcast media reported wires down and burning in Tarrytown at 220 pm. The media also reported multiple tractor trailers were overturned on the Governor Mario Cuomo bridge at 236 pm. Estimated wind gusts over the bridge were between 70 and 80 MPH. At 440 pm in the town of Shrub Oak, multiple trees were knocked down onto power lines across town. A personal weather station measured a 55 mph gust.

At 1228 and 1232 pm, the ASOS at JFK International Airport measured a wind gust to 63 mph. Sustained winds of 48 mph were observed at 1235 pm at JFK. Around 2 pm, the public reported a tree down on multiple cars on Homeland Street in Jamaica Estates. At 349 pm in Jamaica, a tree fell onto a car at CUNY York Campus resulting in an injury per the broadcast media. The ASOS at JFK International airport measured a wind gust to 64 mph at 440 pm. Then, a gust to 67 mph was measured at 527 pm at JFK. Per social media, trees and power lines were downed at 935 pm in Jamaica on Tudor Road near surrey Place.

The mesonet station at Jones Beach Coast Guard measured a 66 mph wind gust at 548 pm. Around 1254 pm, the Department of Highways reported downed wires on the Long Island Expressway Service Road westbound between Searingtown Road and New Hyde Park Road, closing all lanes. At 210 pm, a trained spotter reported trees and wires and two telephone poles down blocking Oakfiled Road and Barrie Avenue in Wantagh. Also in the town of Wantagh, a trained spotter reported a tree down across the roadway at Park Avenue west of Oakland Avenue. This occurred around 330 pm. At the same time, a large tree was reported down onto multiple homes in Garden city per the broadcast media. At 415 pm in Franklin Square, a trained spotter observed a tree down on a car with live wires on New Hyde Park Road. At 515 pm, a tree down was reported down via social media in Oceanside. The tree fell onto a vehicle at the intersection of South Long Beach Road and Foxhurst Road.

The mesonet station in Larchmont Harbor reported a gust to 66 mph at 341 pm. The ASOS at Westchester Airport measured a 64 mph wind gust at 229 pm. At 204 pm in the city of Yonkers, the Department of Highways reported a downed tree on the Sprain Brook Parway northbound north of Tuckahoe Road. In Scarsdale, a tree fell onto the Sprain Brook Parkway southbound north of Jackson Avenue at 224 pm. The media reported trees and wires down in Bronxville around 220 pm. A trained spotter reported 2 trees down, blocking Bryant Avenue and Mamaroneck Avenue, which resulted in wires down and power outages across the area in the city of White Plains at 309 pm. Around 415 pm in Maplewood, a tree was reported down per social media on New Wilmot Road at the Iona Prep entrance. The downed tree took down traffic lights.

At 330 pm, a tree was knocked down at 169 Street and 29th Avenue in Murray Hill per the broadcast media. In Flushing, the media reported a large tree down on 167th and 33rd Avenue at 345 pm. Social media reported a portion of a roof of a hangar was blown off at LaGuardia Airport at 430 pm. In Bayside, a few large oak trees were knocked down, one falling onto a vehicle at 5 pm.

Around 220 pm in Smithtown, the Department of Highways reported a tree down on NY 25A at Sunken Meadow Road, with all lanes closed. In Mount Sinai, the public reported a tree down on Mead Avenue around 430 pm.

Emergency managers reported LIRR service suspended at 544 pm due to a downed utility pole east of the Jamaica Station in Westbury.
