The Atlantic sea breeze has already pushed a few miles inland from the coast, bringing southeast winds at around 10 KT to KFLL. Winds at the other east coast airports, located further inland, are light and variable. The boundary has already begun to initiate showers and storms with gusty and erratic winds along the outflow boundaries. This activity is expected to increase in coverage for the remainder of the afternoon. Thus, VCTS conds and Tempo TS have been added to these TAFs through this evening. Aft 12/0000Z, both showers/storms and winds are forecast to diminish. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 1152 AM EDT Sat Aug 11 2018/ UPDATE... Latest WPC analysis depicts a 1020 mb surface high pressure cell sitting stagnant across the Gulf of Mexico and another high near Bermuda. The Florida peninsula is positioned between both features. Anticyclonic flow around high pressure in the Gulf will allow for north northwest winds from the surface to around 700 mb, as seen in this mornings MFL sounding. The interaction between this and the early afternoon Atlantic sea breeze will create good lift. With plenty of moisture already in place, 1.9" measured on satellite derived PWAT, showers and thunderstorms will have no problem initiating along the sea breeze boundary. Gusty winds will be the main threat with todays convection. The hail threat has diminished, due to warmer air aloft, -6.7C which is around climo. Short term models prog activity to push slowly southward or south southeastward over the interior and eventually nearing the Atlantic coastal areas. By this evening, with the loss of diurnal heating, both winds and shower chances are expected to diminish. PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 324 AM EDT Sat Aug 11 2018/ TYPICAL SUMMER WEATHER PATTERN THIS WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK BEFORE POSSIBLE DRIER WEATHER FOR SECOND HALF OF NEXT WEEK... DISCUSSION... The high over the Gulf of Mexico will slowly dissipate through the weekend, as a low pressure system moves eastward through the Great Lakes region from Northern Plain States. This in turn will push a trough of low pressure through the Eastern United States and dissipate the trough of low pressure over the Western Atlantic waters. This weather pattern will allow for the steering flow over South Florida to be more southwest to west this weekend allowing for tropical moisture to work into the region from the Western Caribbean Sea. Therefore, scattered to numerous pops will continue across the region today and again on Sunday. The trough of low pressure will then move slowly east early next week allowing for high pressure to build back into the Western Atlantic waters. This in turn will allow for the a southerly wind flow on Monday before going more easterly on Tuesday over South Florida. Therefore, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will continue each day, but be more over the interior and west coast metro areas. EXTENDED FORECAST... Saharan Air layer is still forecast by the long range models to work across the Atlantic waters this weekend into early next week and move into South Florida region for the second half of next week into next weekend. If this trend continues, the chance of showers and thunderstorms will again be low across South Florida for the second half of next week into next weekend. However, Wednesday could be an interesting transition day with lingering cooler temps and the leading edge of the dry airmass. MARINE... The winds will be light and variable today before going more of a southerly direction on Sunday into Monday with speeds remaining below 10 knots. The winds should then become more easterly with speeds increasing to 10 to 15 knots for the middle to end of next week. The seas will be 2 feet or less this weekend into early next week over the Gulf and Atlantic Waters, before increasing to 2 to 3 feet in the Atlantic waters by middle to end of next week.
