Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Juan PR 357 PM AST Sun Jun 18 2017 .SYNOPSIS...Weather conditions will deteriorate the first part of the week as two tropical waves moves across the Eastern Caribbean. The first wave will approach the local area on Monday while the second and stronger wave will move across the Eastern Caribbean late Tuesday into Wednesday. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday... Although moisture remains below normal and the forecast area is located in the subsidence side of the upper level trough...showers have formed in the afternoon due to the orographic effects and the sea breeze convergence. Most of the showers have developed over the West and Northwest Puerto Rico. Doppler radar estimated between 2-3 inches of rain along the Rio Anasco and Rio Culebrinas Basin so far this afternoon. This afternoon showers will likely dissipate before sunset. For tonight...subsidence ahead of the tropical wave will limit the shower activity across the islands. However... moisture associated with the first tropical wave will start pooling across the region during the overnight hours (after 06Z)...resulting in scattered showers across the regional waters and portions of the USVI and Eastern PR. Periods of heavy rainfall and gusty winds will be likely on Monday as the tropical wave moves across the local area and the upper level trough meanders aloft. Shower coverage and intensity will diminish on Tuesday as Saharan Dust and subsidence ahead of the second tropical wave dominate the Northeast Caribbean region. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through Monday... A strong tropical wave is still forecast to move across the Eastern Caribbean late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. As a result...moisture and instability will increase across the region...favoring the development of showers and thunderstorms with possible heavy rains and gusty winds. Marine conditions will likely deteriorate as this wave move just south of the local islands. Choppy seas and a high risk of rip currents is possible across the Caribbean Waters and local Passages. The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor this system for signs of development. An upper level ridge will build over the Eastern Caribbean by midweek while the upper level trough retrogress across the Central and Western Caribbean the second part of the week. Weather conditions will improve from Thursday through Saturday as a drier and more stable air mass will encompass the region.
