Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boise ID 846 PM MST Thu Mar 9 2017 .DISCUSSION...Overall forecast remains on decent track. Radar continues to fill in for areas north and west of Boise, helping to make up some lost ground with the system providing a lackluster performance so far. Hydrology concerns remain the point of focus, with the biggest natural threats remaining at the Weiser River, and for some minor flooding in the central Idaho mountains. A Flood Warning remains for the Weiser, with a Flood Advisory in effect for the mountain areas. Additionally, planned flows for the Boise River continue minor flooding around the Glenwood Bridge. Overnight temperatures on track across the area, with many locations hovering around the same temperatures as they are currently, influenced by present cloud cover and ongoing rain. No changes made to current forecast, as efforts remain on monitoring river conditions. && .AVIATION...Tonight widespread showers and mountain obscuration across Baker County Oregon and the west central Idaho and Boise Mountains. Mainly VFR lower elevations with scattered showers. Friday morning showers increasing in coverage across southwest Idaho as a Pacific cold front crosses the area. Improving conditions Friday afternoon and showers ending by Friday evening. Snow levels near 7500 ft msl. Surface winds variable 5-15 kts becoming west 10- 20 kts after 18z Friday. Winds aloft at 10k ft msl west 20-35 kts. Weekend outlook...Mainly VFR. A weak Pacific cold front will bring scattered showers to Baker County Oregon and the west central idaho and Boise Mountains Saturday night, with snow levels near 6500 ft msl. Isolated mountains showers on Sunday will end by Sunday night. && .HYDROLOGY...Moist, warm conditions will remain over the area through Friday. This will increase snowmelt over much of the area, with related spikes in rivers still anticipated. However, the current system underperformed during the day relating to how much moisture was expected. This has resulted in a reduction in concern for portions of the Weiser River, mainly around the Cambridge area. The Flood Warning which was in effect for that area has been terminated as model guidance no longer suggests that flooding is a threat. In similar fashion, river levels at the Weiser River at Weiser have reduced, with major flooding no longer appearing favorable, though moderate flooding is currently forecast. Statements and hazards have been updated or removed to reflect this current thinking. Meanwhile, increasing shower coverage over the central mountains of Idaho will need continued monitoring, with a Flood Advisory still in effect. Conditions will improve on Friday as weak ridging develops over eastern Oregon and southwest Idaho, except for a disturbance impacting the west-central mountains of Idaho on Saturday night. && .PREV DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...Tonight through Saturday...Skies were cloudy this afternoon as of 3 pm MST, with showers moving east at around 20 mph north of a line from Burns to the Owyhees to Fairfield. Latest thinking is that QPF will not be quite as high as previously forecast. Rain will continue overnight, especially in the mountains, with totals tonight through tomorrow ranging from a half inch to 1 inch in the mountains, and 0.05 to 0.15 in the Snake River Valley. Tonight will be very mild, with lows 10-15 degrees above normal. Highs Friday will also be 5-10 degrees above normal. A cool front will move through SE Oregon tomorrow morning, and SW Idaho tomorrow afternoon. This will bring a change in airmass and a cool Friday night/Saturday morning, with lows in the 30s in the Snake River Valley and 20s in the mountains. Saturday will again be mild, with highs from the lower 50s to near 60 in the lower elevations and 40s in the mountains. Saturday will be dry and mild again for most areas, with only scattered showers moving into Baker County and surrounding areas Sat afternoon. LONG TERM...Saturday night through Thursday...Upper level ridge builds into the region for the extended period. Temperatures expected to be around 10 degrees above normal through the period under partly to mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures around 10 degrees above normal, with mid 60s in the valleys and mid 40s to low 50s in mountains.
