Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID

.DISCUSSION...Isolated thunderstorms formed a bit further west
over Harney County Oregon than in previous forecast. Already updated
forecasts to cover these. Models have backed off a bit on
convection continuing past midnight, but the activity over Nevada
still shows some organization that might keep it going into
southern Idaho past midnight. Current forecast has some indication
of the potential past midnight, so will make no changes there.
High resolution models continue to indicate a bit stronger
southerly winds across the higher elevations near the Nevada
border tonight, as outflow from the Nevada storms continues to
move north, so we increased winds south of the Snake River Plain
overnight. Otherwise, cloud cover overnight will likely keep low
temperatures up, and temperatures tomorrow should only be a degree
or two cooler than today, so continuing the Heat Advisory looks
good.

.AVIATION...VFR with isolated thunderstorms ending by 05Z across
the Southern Highlands through the Magic Valley in Idaho and in
southern Harney and Malheur Counties in Oregon. Gusts to 50 kts
possible in conjunction with thunderstorms. Otherwise, surface
winds will be variable, 10 kts or less. Winds aloft to 10KFT MSL:
south to southwest 10-20 kts. &&

.PREV DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday. We have extended the heat
advisory for the Treasure Valley through Sunday, as Sunday will be
only a degree or two cooler than today, not enough to provide
relief. But Monday will be another 5 to 8 degrees cooler which
will be noticeable. We are tracking the northward progress of a
weak disturbance in southern Nevada. Models develop isolated
thunderstorms south of the Snake Basin late today and tonight, and
in all Idaho mountain zones Sunday afternoon and Sunday night.
Storms will bring gusty winds 40 to 50 mph but little if any rain.
Monday will bring clearing and cooling from the west as a Pacific
trough comes inland. Tuesday should be sunny with normal
temperatures for a change as the trough passes through.

LONG TERM...Tuesday night through Saturday. Through the mid and
long term, the area is expected to be under a southwest flow, with
an upper high near the Four Corners region and an upper low off the
coast of British Columbia. This will keep temperatures above normal.
Both the GFS and ECMWF are showing some indication of monsoon
moisture returning to the area, but for now, the flow looks to favor
thunderstorms only in the terrain of Idaho, mainly along the ID/NV
border. In addition, as the high continues to intensify toward the
weekend, valley highs could return to 100-105F.
