Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 232 PM PDT Thu Apr 13 2017 .SYNOPSIS...Clouds and showers increase from west to east today with cooling statewide and windy conditions in the east. Conditions dry out the first half of the weekend only to become unsettled again Sunday. This pattern will continue through the week. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday. A trough of low pressure will move through the area tonight. Instability appears minimal, but it may be enough to spark a few thunderstorms as the main band of precipitation moves eastward across the state tonight. Gradients tighten this evening as the trough presses in, especially in eastern counties. Wind Advisories are in effect for White Pine, Northeastern Nye, and Southeastern Elko counties where winds of 25 to 35 mph will gust to near 50 mph. Temperatures will drop behind the front and snow levels will descend from the mountains to valley floors with minor accumulations in the mountains and mostly just wet snows mixed with rain in the valleys. Trough energy lifts northeast Friday leaving residual showers confined mainly to Humboldt and Northern Elko counties. Friday's highs will be mainly in the 40's but will rebound quickly well into the 50's most areas on Saturday as southwest flow quickly returns ahead of the next shortwave. Lows will be mainly in the 20's. Southwest flow over NV Saturday night with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Embedded shortwave energy in the southwesterly flow will bring showers to western Humboldt County by late Sunday morning, which will expand south and east Sunday through Sunday night bringing light to moderate valley rains and mountain snows to most of the CWA. .LONG TERM...Sunday night through next Friday. A compact and quick moving shortwave will bring more cloud cover and a chance of light rain showers to the northwest and northern half of Nevada Sunday later afternoon (Humboldt County) and northern Lander/Eureka, and Elko counties Sunday evening/night. Monday should be mainly dry across the state with mid 50s north to around 70 south, but more shortwave energy quickly follows which will bring valley rain showers and mountain rain/snow showers to both northern and central sections of NV on Tuesday. We'll get another break in the weather with mainly dry conditions on Wednesday before broader and stronger shortwave energy digs southeastward across the Great Basin Wednesday night into Thursday. This system will be cooler (mainly 40s on Thursday) and has the potential to have more widespread precipitation with it. Valley locations will likely see a mix of rain and snow showers especially across northern NV while higher elevations, particularly mountain passes and peaks will likely receive at least some light accumulations. Conditions will gradually improve during the day on Friday. An upper 500mb ridge builds back into the region Friday evening into early next weekend which will bring fair skies and warmer temperatures to the entire state by next Saturday (60s to lower 70s). && .AVIATION...Cold front moving east across NV has a band of rain showers that will impact KEKO through 00Z and may just brush KELY this evening. Strong gusty winds to 40 kts at KELY will gradually diminish between 00-04Z. KTPH should remain precipitation free while a few post-cold front VCSH light snow showers will be possible around KWMC and KEKO this evening and early overnight through about 09Z. && .HYDROLOGY...Flows around the region generally lowering but current round of rains and snows will impede this and keep some river levels from dropping as fast, particularly smaller streams. The lower Humboldt River from Battle Mountain to Comus will remain in minor to moderate flood. The stretch from Comus to Winnemucca will persist in moderate flood generally with still major flood downstream of Winnemucca to the Pershing County line. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
