.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 155 AM EDT Sun Jul 9 2017

HIgh pressure across Indiana and Ohio will provide a Mostly Sunny
and warm conclusion to the weekend. The high will settle southeast
of Indiana this afternoon...allowing warmer and more humid air to
arrive in the state tonight. This will set the stage for weather
ahead this week.

An upper level weather is expected to arrive in Indiana on
Monday. This in combination with the warm and humid air mass in
place will result chance for showers and storms on Monday.

Several additional weather disturbances are expected to pass
across Central Indiana in the week ahead. This will keep nearly
daily chances for showers and storms through the work week.

.NEAR TERM /Rest of Today/...

Issued at 934 AM EDT Sun Jul 9 2017

Upped sky cover in the extreme southwest forecast area based on
latest trends seen on satellite imagery. Adjusted winds up a bit per
model data. Otherwise forecast is in good shape.

Previous discussion follows...

Surface analysis shows broad high pressure in place across
Illinois/Indiana/Ohio. GOES16 shows clear skies across the state.
Dew points were in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

GFS and NAM continue to suggest strong subsidence across the area
today...associated with the high pressure system. Forecast
soundings and Time heights show a dry column. Forecast soundings
show attainable convective temperatures in the upper 70s...but a
mid level inversion is present. This will result in just some flat
topped CU. Thus will trend toward a mostly sunny sky. Given the
start of warm air advection today...will trend highs at or
slightly above the forecast builder blend.

&&

.SHORT TERM /Tonight THrough Tuesday Night/...

Issued at 155 AM EDT Sun Jul 9 2017

Quiet weather appears in store for this evening as the models
continue to suggest the high pressure system to our south will
dominate our weather. However things will begin to change
overnight as the GFS and NAM suggest NW flow in place aloft. Both
models agree a short wave over Iowa and Northing Illinois will
push toward NW Indiana overnight within the NW flow. Warm air
advection on the back side of the high and good moisture looks to
return to Central Indiana also. Forecast soundings show a much
more saturated column overnight. Thus given the expected
forcing...thunderstorms upstream are expected to propagate toward
Indiana late tonight and into early Monday with this associated
short wave. However coverage and strength remains in question.
Thus will trend toward 50 pops at least late tonight and monday
morning...particularly across the north where forcing will be
best. Will trend tonight at or above a blend given the expected
warm air advection and will stick close to the blend on
highs...given the potential for morning rain. Since the dynamics
looks to exit the area by afternoon...will trend pops lower in the
afternoon.

The overall pattern persists on Monday night through Tuesday
night. Models suggest that the WNW Flow remains in place aloft.
Thermal ridging and warm air advection is also in place across
Illinois and Indiana. Models are disagreeing with timing on the
next short wave with the GFS suggesting Tuesday afternoon and the
NAM is more Tuesday night. Meanwhile Forecast soundings show a
warm column with convective temperatures rising in to the middle
90s which will not be reached. Thus we will need these short waves
to act as triggering mechanisms...and confidence is low in how
the models are handling them. Thus for now will keep low chc pops
on Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night...as this seem the best
window for these waves. Will trend highs and lows at or above the
forecast builder blend.

.LONG TERM /Wednesday through Saturday/...
Issued at 229 AM EDT Sun Jul 9 2017

Ensembles in good agreement in suggesting the local area will reside
along the northeastern edge of a heat ridge, centered over the
Plains, during most of the this period. This is a favorable pattern
for periodic convective clusters as disturbances move along the edge
of the heat ridge. Will keep chance PoPs for thunderstorms in the
forecast through next Friday.

By next weekend, ensembles suggest the ridge may retrograde back
into the Rockies, resulting in a more amplified northwesterly flow.
This may help to shove the more unstable air off to the south. Will
go dry for next Saturday.

.AVIATION /Discussion for the 091800Z TAF Issuance/...
Issued at 1145 AM EDT Sun Jul 9 2017

Good confidence that VFR conditions will continue through at least
06z. After 06z, could see an MCS move over some or all of the
terminals. However, best chance looks to be after 12z. MVFR and
worse conditions are possible if the MCS does develop and move over
any or all of the terminals. Will likely have to add thunder in the
next set or two of TAFs.

Winds will be south and southwest less than 10 knots.

This hazardous weather outlook is for central Indiana.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.

Outlook: There is a chance for Thunderstorms tonight.

Hazards: Lightning. Gusty Winds. Heavy Rain.

Timing: After 2 AM

Discussion: High pressure will provide dry weather today. An Upper
level weather disturbance arriving in Indiana may generate
thunderstorms after 200 AM.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday.

Outlook: Periodic threats for strong thunderstorms will exist from
Monday evening through much of the upcoming week. Severe storms will
be possible Monday afternoon and night and Tuesday afternoon and
night. Damaging winds and large hail will be the main severe threats.
Cloud to ground lightning and brief heavy rainfall are threats with
any thunderstorm.

Discussion: Daily chances for storms return Monday into much of the
week as a favorable northwest flow aloft enables several upper level
disturbances to track across the region and interact with a frontal
boundary.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Spotter activation is possible at times early next week.

According to the IndyStar newspaper, two kayakers rescued from the White River Sunday afternoon have been hospitalized. Shortly before 12:30 p.m., police and fire officials were called to the 7300 block Westfield Boulevard for a possible drowning, dispatchers confirmed. The two kayakers had come out of their boats and were stuck in what we call the boil, the rapid churning area of the low-head dam that basically traps you and doesn't let you out, the fire chief said. As crews were getting their boat into the water, the first victim was released from the boil. The fire department said firefighters threw him a rope and life jacket. He was able to grab the rope and hold on with encouragement from people watching from the Monon Bridge above while an off-duty firefighter grabbed bolt cutters to open the fencing and allow crews to carry the boat to the water.

They were able to pull the first victim onto the boat. He was conscious but exhausted, officials said. Meanwhile, the second victim was stuck in the boil, unconscious. When the boat started back up stream to pass the victim to medical crews on shore, the second victim was released from the boil and floated downstream before getting stuck in a strainer underneath the Monon Bridge.

Witnesses said both men, one in his 50s and one in his 40s, were wearing life vests when they first went into the water, but the strength of the rushing water as they were trapped in the boil pulled the vests from their bodies. The kayakers were taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment. Both patients are in critical condition. One was alert and one was not, the fire chief said. Very, very dangerous situation today, this is one of those days when we're asking people not to be on the river today. Water is up well over a foot and a half, maybe two feet. The current is running about 8 knots. It's very swift water today.

One kayaker, 48, pulled from the White River, died Sunday, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department. The second kayaker, 54, has improved since Sunday.

The people who died

As the offices recorded each death: direct deaths were caused by the weather itself, indirect ones by something it set in motion.
