An intense lake effect snow band settled into LaPorte County during the afternoon and early evening hours of December 31st. Whiteout conditions and amounts in excess of a foot were reported.
Deaths and injuries are direct and indirect together, as the offices filed them. Damage is property and crops in the dollars of the year, not adjusted for inflation, and only where an office estimated it.

Lake effect snow showers will become heavier near the lake today
with several inches of snow expected. The snow showers will
diminish tonight as bitterly cold air remains over the area. More
lake snow showers are likely later this week. In addition to the
snow showers, dangerously cold wind chills of 15 below to 25 below
can be expected at times through Tuesday morning.

Will be issuing a winter storm warning shortly for La Porte
county. A west-east band has formed along southern periphery of
mesolow tracking across southern Lake Michigan which should drop
southward across extreme SW Berrien/northern La Porte counties
over the next hour or two. A more dominant single band on western
periphery of this mesolow will then push inland with some
impressive snowfall rates in excess of 2 inches per hour expected.
While period of impacts may be relatively short lived, given
potential high impacts with these types of snowfall rates and
potential of some localized 6+ inch snowfall amounts through early
this evening in short time span, will add La Porte county to the
winter storm warning shortly. The period of greatest impact for La
Porte county is expected from 20Z-01Z.

A developing type 6 lake effect snow band over Lake Michigan was
continuing to provide great forecasting challenges in both timing
and location of the arrival of both the south section near
Berrien County and the larger section farther northwest over the
open waters. High resolution models still were really having a
hard time resolving the individual bands. Using radar trends and a
blend of these model solutions, favor heavy snow showers moving
inland this morning with the south section, and then more showers
late today/this evening as the remnants of the larger band come on
shore. Have kept the warning for Berrien County with the advisory
farther inland. Several inches of snow are likely associated with
this system. It is possible Laporte County may need to be upgraded
to a warning, but for now will keep it in an advisory.
In addition to the winter storm warning and advisory, bitterly
cold wind chills are expected again tonight and have prompted a
wind chill advisory for almost all of the area.

Bitterly cold air will remain over the area into the middle of
this week with wind chills becoming dangerously cold. After
coordination with surrounding offices, have issued a wind chill
advisory that covers nearly all of the area through mid day
Tuesday. Wind chill temperatures are expected to be between -15
and -25 much of the time and will probably dip below -25 at
colder locations tonight and Monday night. In addition to the
bitterly cold wind chills, more lake effect snow showers are
expected.

KIWX/KLOT radars depicting LES band moving into southern lake
Michigan and impacts will be seen at KSBN early on in this TAF
cycle. Wide ranging vsbys as expected with 1/4 mile in intense band
at KBEH to 1-3 miles in the lighter bands in surrounding areas. Will
continue to monitor up to issuance time but plan is to use higher
range for prevailing and tempo to account for heavier bands. Model
trends continue to indicate single band to transition to multi-band
NW flow between 00z-06z as meso-low moves onshore and will trend
KSBN to MVFR -SHSN accordingly. Meanwhile...expect VFR through the
period at KFWA with light NW winds.

A band of heavy lake effect snow will drop southward across northwest Indiana and southwest Lower Michigan later this afternoon into early this evening. This band is expected to affect La Porte county and southwest Berrien county after 3 or 4 PM EST this afternoon, and then progress across the remainder of Berrien into St. Joseph county Indiana early this evening. A brief period of very heavy snow with snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour is expected across La Porte and extreme southwest Berrien county during this period, with near whiteout conditions in association with the heaviest snow band. A heavy lake effect snow band produced whiteout conditions and snowfall totals of 7 to 14 inches. There was a report of 14.0 inches near La Porte. Snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hours were experienced within this snow band. These conditions led to difficult travel conditions and an accident on the toll road involving at least 20 vehicles.
