Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 149 PM MDT Tue Aug 1 2017 .DISCUSSION...A ridge of high pressure remained positioned over NRN Nevada early this afternoon as deep monsoon moisture pooled over Arizona and Mexico. To our north, a modest disturbance was noted digging SE into NW Montana and is expected to continue shearing SE this evening possibly triggering some weak convection over the CNTRL and NRN mountains. And finally, several sub-tropical disturbances were noted rotating west and north around the periphery of the ridge and are expected to impact the pattern by this weekend. For the short term, the upper ridge should hold firm through Friday with weak instability and influxes of moisture helping to trigger isolated afternoon thunderstorms each day. A back-door front will drop out of Montana into the Snake River plain Wednesday afternoon producing potential Lake Wind conditions on American Falls Thursday morning. The ridge breaks down sometime Saturday or Sunday with an influx of sub-tropical moisture and an increase in thunderstorm activity continuing into early next week. Seasonable daytime highs are anticipated through the week and with the increasing moisture over the weekend we should see some cooling leading into early next week. Huston && .AVIATION...The potential for isolated thunderstorms continues over the next 24 hours across the central mountains and eastern highlands. IF anything develops KSUN and KDIJ would be most affected. Gusty winds would be the main impact. Otherwise, VFR weather is forecast with sustained winds under 15kts. Keyes && .FIRE WEATHER...High pressure will become centered to our west for the next several days. Today should actually end as the day with the lowest widespread afternoon humidity. A few storms remain possible through this evening across Zones 411, 413 and 475 and 476. Similar areas are looking at possible isolated dry storms the next couple of afternoons, albeit down just a bit from today and even down a bit more Thursday. With the center of high pressure settling in to our west, that actually will bring the flow around to the north or northeast. It will be subtle, but we are expecting temperatures to drop off a couple of degrees in this pattern. That in turn, will bring slightly higher afternoon humidity to especially our more northern fire zones. Temperatures WILL REMAIN above normal though even with this pattern shift. By late in the weekend and next week, we are forecasting an increase in monsoon moisture. This should bring a little more cloudiness our way and an increase in shower and thunderstorm coverage.
