Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 228 PM PDT Mon Jul 31 2017 .SYNOPSIS...Monsoon moisture will continue to push in from the south, bringing chances for thunderstorms through the week. Temperatures will remain near to slightly above normal, except in areas where thunderstorms occur. Humid conditions will also persist, most notably near and southeast of Interstate 15. && .DISCUSSION...Showers and thunderstorms are spotty again this afternoon, with lightning limited to northern Mohave County as of 2 PM. Instability is limited today thanks mainly to the slightly drier surface air in place. This will not last long as the wave moving very slowly west across Mexico turns our flow more southeasterly tonight into Tuesday, bringing a return of deeper monsoon moisture. Yesterday, the models had suggested that nocturnal storms might affect much of the southern CWA tonight, but today the better forcing looks a little farther south, so if storms affect our area overnight, the most likely target will be near Highway 62. Storms should be a bit more widespread tomorrow at least from Las Vegas southward, and then spreading northwest through southeast California on Wednesday. At this time, it appears that Wednesday could be a significant day for southeast California, with flash flooding possible, but given how the models changed since yesterday, confidence in Wednesday is not high enough to issue a Flash Flood Watch at this time. Thursday could be active as well, then the models are still hinting at some flavor of westerly flow by the weekend, which could begin to dry things out a bit. && .FIRE WEATHER...The atmosphere will be fairly moist and unstable through the week, leading to isolated to scattered thunderstorms which will have the potential to produce heavy rain. High pressure developing over northern Nevada may suppress thunderstorm activity over Lincoln, Nye and Esmeralda Counties for much of the upcoming week. && .HYDROLOGY...Creeks, streams and rivers in northern Inyo County have shown decreasing flows over the last couple of days. However, some road closures continue in the area. Bishop Creek Bypass and Big Pine Creek Bypass continue to be utilized to minimize flows through Bishop and Big Pine. Increasing moisture will bring increasing thunderstorm chances, which could produce additional runoff that could rapidly increase flows beginning on Wednesday. Remember, never drive through flooded roadways or around barricades. Also, pastureland or farmland adjacent to creeks, streams or rivers could experience areas of standing water. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Light winds favoring diurnal trends are expected tonight into tomorrow. Thunderstorm activity has been fairly limited today and is not expected to be a factor in the forecast through tomorrow morning. Similar conditions expected tomorrow with slightly better chances for thunderstorm outflows tomorrow evening, but chances for storms themselves in the valley remaining very low. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Light winds favoring diurnal trends expected for most of the region. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms expected this evening and overnight mainly south and east of Interstate 15. A period of showers may impact KEED and/or KIFP late this evening. SCT-BKN cloud cover likely south of I-15 with mostly clear skies north.
