What happened

The episode as NWS FFC wrote it up.

Through the month of January, a more active pattern provided above normal rainfall to the majority of the state, and improving drought conditions across the state enough to remove the D4 Exceptional drought category entirely. By the end of the month, the remaining D3 Extreme drought area stretched a small area from Ellijay, to Blairsville, to Helen in the NE Georgia mountains. The D2 Severe drought area retreated northward, only including areas north of a line from Franklin, to Acworth, to Athens, to Elberton.

Even with the January rainfall, the long term drought remained a concern into the late winter months, with 365 day normal rainfall departures of 9 to 20 inches across north Georgia. Many of the large Georgia lakes remained below seasonal levels, including Lake Lanier, ending the month nearly 10 feet below the normal pool level.

Area Forecast Discussion...Updated
National Weather Service Peachtree City GA
945 PM EST Sat Dec 31 2016

.Update...
Not much cooling expected overnight with southerly flow at 925mb.
Temperatures should hold near steady or creep up a bit. Have made
only minor tweaks to the overnight temperatures...otherwise no
changes in the forecast.

.Previous...
.SHORT TERM /Tonight through Sunday Night/...
Has been an interesting day thus far as we get an influx of mainly
mid level moisture into the area along with continued relatively
cold temps above the surface. This is usually a perfect setup for an
initial onset of sleet and indeed that is what we have been seeing
across the area. No travel issues as temps at the surface remain
mainly in the 40s and in fact most all of the precip has
transitioned to rain as the atmosphere becomes more saturated.
Across the mountains though...would not be surprised to see a few
more reports of sleet in some of the more moderate precip activity
through the remainder of the afternoon hours.

Strongest of the shortwaves looks to move through central
Mississippi and Alabama this evening and into west central GA
overnight providing for increased precipitation chances in an
increasingly moist environment. As low levels get in on the act and
cloud bases lower below 1k feet...we should see rain accumulations
increase. WPC values only on the order of a quarter of an inch from
00Z to 06Z over the southern tier but quickly ramp up to close to an
inch during the second 6hr period between 06Z and 12Z.

Shortwave moves east of the area by Sunday but still plenty of
moisture and large scale lift to warrant continued high pops across
the area although QPF values may tail off late in the day.
Models not as ambitious over the northern portions of the forecast
area with pops or QPF through the short term period. I believe the
QPF part but even though -RA will be light...rain chances should be
high and have gone above guidance in these areas.

Another wave poised to move through Sunday night. CAPE values still
near zero...at least at the surface but still some chance for some
isolated TS through Monday morning. Chances look too low for
inclusion at this point and have just gone with SHRA for the
southern tier for now.

.LONG TERM /Monday through Saturday/...
Mainly only tweaks to the long term based on the latest guidance.
A wet start to the week looks to continue. Mainly small rain or
snow chances late week into next weekend are low confidence and
will just have to be monitored as the week progresses.

BDL

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...
Models still in pretty good agreement through the long term
showing GA in a very wet pattern through day 7. The next system
is still expected to move into the CWA tonight and continue to
push showers and isolated thunderstorms across the area through
Tuesday. Right now it looks like the best chance of any thunder
will be Monday and monday night as the main frontal boundary and
best instabilities will be across the region by then. The models
continue to show the deeper moisture with this system moving east
of the state Tuesday but keeping the main cold front lagging
across the state. With this frontal boundary slowly moving
through there may still be enough moisture and instability for
some isolated shower sand thunderstorms but not expecting much by
Tuesday Afternoon/Evening. After the cold front moves east of the
state...broad zonal upper level flow sets up with moisture
continuing to stream across the region through day 7. For now will
continue with chance to slight chance to chance pops day 5 through
7.

.HYDROLOGY...
Did ponder the idea of a Hydrologic Outlook with this issuance
but really...with the length of time we have for this rainfall to
occur...it will be mostly just much needed rain for the area. Some
totals now eclipsing 4 inches for storm total but again this is
over a 36 to 48 hour period and areas of Central GA should be able
to handle these totals.

.AVIATION...
00Z UPDATE...

Mid level cigs should gradually lower to IFR tonight...expecting
LIFR around sunrise. Beyond that...it looks like LIFR will
continue through the TAF period. Winds will remain on the east
side...increasing to around 10 to 12kt toward sunrise.

//ATL CONFIDENCE...00Z UPDATE...
Medium on IFR timing.
High on remaining elements.
