.SYNOPSIS...
Surface high pressure over the Great Basin will bring offshore
flow through Friday, resulting in clear and warm weather. Gusty
northeast winds will affect the mountain passes and foothills
through Friday morning. Cooler Saturday and Sunday with increasing
onshore flow and a deeper marine layer ahead of a trough passing
by to our north. This trough may bring patchy light rain west of
the mountains Sunday afternoon and evening.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
Offshore gradients have ticked up early this morning to around 9
MB...resulting in gusty winds especially in the favored offshore
wind locations. For example, over the past two hours we have seen
winds gusting to 55 mph at Pleasants Peak and 47 mph at Julian.
Winds will continue to increase this morning with gusts of 50 to
60 mph in the favored locations, then gradually diminish this
afternoon and evening. A wind advisory remains in place for these
gusty winds through this afternoon. Although likely to be below
wind advisory levels, gusty winds will continue through Friday
morning due to the persistent offshore flow.
Along with the gusty Santa Ana winds, temperatures will be quite
warm today and Friday, with highs around 10 degrees above normal
in the valleys and coastal areas. Temperatures in the valleys will
reach into the lower 80s.
By late Friday flow will reverse to onshore as the ridge breaks
and a trough drops out of the Gulf of Alaska. This trough will
move across California on Sunday, then move east of the region on
Monday. With the increasing onshore flow, temperatures will take a
tumble Saturday and Sunday with increasing coastal low clouds and
a deep marine layer. The trough will focus its energy over
Northern California but will have the potential to bring some
pockets of light rain to SoCal for the coast, valleys and
mountains. Pops remain in the chance category, at best, with this
system. Probably more noteworthy with this system will be a
period of strong westerly winds in the forecast Sunday afternoon
through Monday morning.
Beyond Monday next week, temperatures will rebound to above normal
levels as high pressure builds through the middle of next week.
There could be another period of offshore winds once again by next
Wednesday and Thursday.

gusts 35-50 kt in the foothills and locally downstream along with
associated moderate uddfs/llws, including vcnty KONT, KRAL, KSNA,

The RAWS station in Alpine reported a peak wind gust of 61 mph. Additional wind gusts in the 40-55 mph range were reported over other sections of the San Diego County Valleys.
The Highland Springs RAWS station reported easterly wind gusts between 58 and 60 mph over a 7 hour period. The peak gust of 60 mph occurred between 0816 and 0916PST.
