Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 955 PM PST Sun Dec 25 2016 .SYNOPSIS...Outside of a few flurries across eastern Mohave County this afternoon dry weather is expected for the next several days. Temperatures will remain cool Monday then begin to warm to above normal by Wednesday. More unsettled weather may return later this week into the weekend. && .UPDATE... Clearing skies has allowed for temperatures to drop more than what was previously forecast. Many current temperatures are within a few degrees or in some cases below forecast morning lows. Have updated the forecast to lower overnight temperatures. && PREV DISCUSSION 141 PM PST Sun Dec 25 2016 .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday. Quite a change today compared to the last several. Just a few flurries were noted on radar over eastern Mohave County as of 2130z. These should diminish fairly quickly this afternoon/evening. Heights will increase over the area through the short term period, allowing for temperatures to slowly rise beginning Monday. The main forecast concern will be wind speeds Monday and Tuesday, mainly down the Colorado River Valley where gusts could approach 30kts. At this time, it looks like winds will remain below Lake Wind Advisory levels Monday, but may approach them on Tuesday. We will continue to monitor these trends over the next few shifts. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday. Models in good agreement with large scale features on Wednesday and Thursday showing the Great Basin under a dry northwest flow with an upper low positioned well southwest of San Diego. May start seeing some high clouds increasing from the southwest Thursday but overall temperatures will be slightly above normal. The only wind issue would be a lingering north wind affecting the Colorado River between Lake Mohave and Laughlin/Bullhead City. The upper low is progged to weaken and move inland through the Southwest States Friday as a stronger/colder trough drops south through the Great Basin Saturday with dry northwest flow returning for Sunday. Regarding the upper low on Friday there remains some timing and track uncertainty. For now, left a slight chance of showers in for the higher terrain of eastern San Bernardino, Mohave and Clark Counties. The colder trough dropping in from the north Saturday looks to bring a chance of showers to central Nevada with snow levels dropping to the valley floors Saturday evening. Due to again some timing differences, question for Las Vegas will be if the showers will end prior to us welcoming in the New Year. Temperatures cooling between Friday and Sunday. Will need to monitor pre-frontal winds across the Mojave Desert Friday night with stronger northwest winds expected behind the cold front Saturday-Sunday. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Light and variable winds will continue through sunset then return to a west or southwest direction this evening. Northeast winds up to 10 kts are then expected Monday. Outside of winds, no significant weather is expected through the period. For the rest of southern Nevada...northwest Arizona...and southeast California...Mainly light winds favoring typical directions will continue through tonight. North to northeast winds are expected to develop Monday, mainly impacting favored areas such as the Colorado River Valley, where gusts 20-30 kts are possible. Outside of winds, no significant weather is expected through the period. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotter activation is not expected for the next several days.
