Excessive Heat in California, June 20 to 22, 2016

.SYNOPSIS...
A warming trend will continue through Tuesday as high pressure
builds over the region. Temperatures will be 10-15 degrees normal
through midweek with an Excessive Heat Warning in the Kern County
Desert. Only slight cooling is expected later in the week with
temperatures still several degrees above normal.

.DISCUSSION...Water vapor satellite imagery continues to show a
very large ridge of high pressure over much of the southern U.S.
and a definite northward push of the ridge across Central and
Southern California. As expected, temperatures are on the rise
with 100+ degree readings becoming widespread over the San Joaquin
Valley, while the deserts continue to bake and reach the 110 mark
in some locations. An excessive heat warning remains in effect. Not
too much new to add in this discussion about the forecast as the
trend is heading towards a max heating period of Tuesday-Wednesday
as models maximize the ridge and then some minor lowering of
temperatures later in the week as an area of low pressure moves
across the Pacific Northwest effectively taking the top off of the
ridge.

I have avoided use of the word "cooling" in this discussion as
values over most of the forecast area lower elevations will stay
above 100 degrees well into next week. A look into next week shows
a potential for the next building ridge to build farther west, and
this could again intensify the heat to even higher values than
this week. All in all, a hot weather pattern for late June.
