What happened

The episode as NWS RLX wrote it up.

A low pressure system tracked east, across Kentucky into southern West Virginia during the daylight hours on the 2nd. A mixture of light rain and snow fell during the day. The initial precipitation caused some pockets of freezing rain in the southern coal fields counties of West Virginia near dawn. Numerous vehicular accidents occurred due to light icing from patches of freezing rain in Logan and Boone Counties. For example, the Boone County 911 center reported 15 to 20 vehicular accidents.

The light rain and snow changed to all snow toward sunset.

In the wake of the low center, arctic air poured south causing a quick freeze and lingering snow showers into the night. Snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches were common in many mountain counties, with less in the western lowlands.

Temperatures plummeted into the single digits and lower teens for most of the lowlands with some below zero reading above 3000 feet in elevation.
