Heavy Snow in Iowa, November 26, 2014

A clipper system dug southeastward through the state with persistent light to moderate snowfall occurring during the early morning hours on the 26th and continuing through the day before tapering off around late afternoon/early evening on the 26th. Winds were generally light with little impacts due to the longer duration light to moderate snowfall. An initial band of moderate snow moved through during the overnight hours in the warm air advection region of the system as warmer, moist air wrapped up around the low pressure area. As the system pivoted to the east/southeast through the day, light snowfall persisted with another moderate to heavier band of snow falling in the mid afternoon hours as the colder air pushed in on the backside of the system. Northwest winds picked up after the snow ended with some minor drifting of snow reported on roadways. Total snowfall amounts for the area were generally in the 2 to 5 inch range across central Iowa with a few higher amounts across extreme north central Iowa where 9 inches was reported at Ringsted in Emmet County. At Emmetsburg in Palo Alto County, 7.3 inches was reported, and 7.0 inches fell at both Titonka and Algona in Kossuth County and at Goldfield in Wright County.
