AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TALLAHASSEE FL
306 PM EDT Tue Jul 1 2014

.Near Term [Through Tonight]...

Started to see some showers and storms developing across our coastal
FL Big Bend zones as of 17Z. We expect this afternoon's convection
to remain confined mainly to our FL zones and perhaps the VLD area.
Overall coverage will be below climo with highest PoPs (30-40%)
along the coast in the vicinity of the sea breeze. Storms that
develop on this and any other residual mesoscale boundaries will
drift back toward the south as the steering flow remains northerly
at 10-15 kt. With delta theta-e values up around 30K per this
morning's KTAE sounding, a few of the storms could be strong to
marginally severe with wet microbursts producing 35- to 50-kt
gusts.

.Short Term [Wednesday Through Thursday Night]...

TS Arthur is forecast by NHC to remain offshore as it nearly
parallels the southeast U.S. coastline to a position near the outer
banks of North Carolina by 12z Friday. This track is very
close to the latest GFS solution. An upper level trough will
approach and swing across the eastern CONUS with axis through our
CWA by the end of the period. This will send a surface front/trough
our way bringing better chances for afternoon convection (albeit
below normal). In the meantime, we will have to contend with a few
days of near record high temperatures. Leaned closer to the MAV
temps which shows triple digits for TLH, DHN and ABY for Wednesday.
MOS tends to undercut VLD so bumped up to 100 as well. Thursday's
max temps should be within a degree or two of Wednesday's only with
higher dewpoints as the low level flow swings around to become
onshore. Forecast Heat Index values for Wednesday shows an area of
108-112 degrees over portions of the Florida panhandle south of
I-10. This area expands eastward covering most of the Florida Big
Bend and up to include Valdosta on Thursday. Heat Indices of 108+
would require the issuance of a heat advisory and will have to
monitor closely. Overnight lows Wednesday night will be in the mid
to upper 70s with temps near seasonal levels (lower 70) Thursday
night. MET MOS PoPs have come in higher than the MAV and will take a
blend.

.Long Term [Friday Through Tuesday]...

The local region will be on the backside of the upper trough with
drier than normal conditions through Saturday. A building ridge
east of the Florida peninsula will bring increasing moisture from
the onshore flow for Sunday through Tuesday. PoPs are expected to
be around climo (40-50%) for Monday and Tuesday. Temps will also
be near seasonal levels with mins in the lower 70s and max temps
in the lower 90s.

&&

.Aviation...

[Through 18Z Wednesday] Isolated to scattered TSRA will continue
to develop across mainly the FL terminals today. Decided to only
mention in the vicinity for now, but it is possible that ECP, TLH
and possibly VLD will need to be amended if it appears a TS is
taking aim on the airport. Overnight conditions will be VFR.

&&

.Marine...

Light offshore winds will continue through midday Wednesday. Then
light to occasionally moderate west to southwest winds will
prevail through the upcoming holiday weekend. Winds should remain
below headline criteria with seas generally under 3 feet.

&&

.Fire Weather...

It is unlikely that red flag conditions will be met over the next
week. However, RH will be rather low behind a cold front on Friday.

&&

.Hydrology...

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms will be possible this week.
Although heavy rain is almost always possible during the summer
months, we expect any heavy rain to be very localized and unlikely
to significantly affect local river stages. All rivers are
currently well below flood stage.
