AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SACRAMENTO CA 922 AM PDT Sun Aug 10 2014 .Synopsis... Thunderstorms are possible over the mountains the next several afternoons. Potentially more widespread thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday including valley locations. Temperatures to remain near normal through the week. && .Discussion... Cool morning with temperatures 5 to 8 degrees cooler this morning due to a combination of a good delta push and some synoptic cooling from a closed low that is along the coast. The marine layer is around 2000 feet deep this morning. The low will remain nearly stationary the next 24 to 36 hours before moving inland late Monday night and Tuesday morning. Thunderstorms will generally remain over the mountains today and Monday with a chance that some thunderstorms could spread into the valley as the low moves through late Monday night and Tuesday morning. A stronger low moving into the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday will generate the kick needed to move the low through the region with clearing expected Tuesday afternoon based on the current timing of the movement of the low. Nocturnal activity will be possible the next couple of nights as well. && .Extended Discussion (Thursday through Sunday) Medium range models differ with depth, track, and progression of upper low/trough midweek. General theme is system will weaken as it moves onshore with main impact appearing to be continued below normal temperatures and increased onshore flow. Beyond midweek, 00z runs of the ECMWF-HiRes and GEM were somewhat similar to the 12z Oper GFS in showing upper ridging gradually rebuilding over NorCal with a warming trend to slightly above normal into Saturday. 12z runs of the ECMWF-HiRes/GEM however are now keeping varying amounts of upper troughing over the area into Saturday which may point to high temps remaining near to slightly below normal. Will continue advertised warming for now and see what next model runs reveal. && .Aviation... Closed low along CA coast with mainly VFR conditions over interior NorCal next 24 hours. Exceptions include local MVFR conditions with isolated/scattered mountain & Shasta County thunderstorms after 21z, and MVFR/IFR near vicinity of wildfires.
