What happened

The episode as NWS ILM wrote it up.

Thunderstorms developed across the central Carolinas ahead of an approaching cold front. These thunderstorms moved into a maritime tropical air-mass with dewpoints near 70 degrees and temperatures well up in the 80s. The environment was rather strongly sheared, 0-6 km bulk shear was greater than 40 knots and unstable, surface-based CAPE values around 1500 J/kg. Discrete cells organized into a Quasi-Linear Convective System, resulting in wind damage.
