A low pressure system tracking to our south provided a shot of snow to parts of extreme southeast Kentucky on Thursday January 17th. There was a sharp cutoff to the precipitation, but where it fell, it fell heavily for a 2 to 3 hour period. The snow was even accompanied by thunder in parts of Bell and Harlan Counties during the afternoon hours.

Snowfall amounts ranged from 2 inches in Harlan upwards to 6.3 inches in Cumberland. There was little variance between the valleys around Cumberland and the top of Black Mountain where 6 was reported by the Highway Department.

Up to 4 of snow was reported from near Pineville south to Middlesboro with numerous accidents reported on Highway 25E, 119 and 190.

Numerous accidents were reported on I-75 and US 25 south of Williamsburg due to snow covered roads. The highway deparment reported 2 of snow in Williamsburg.
