Tornadoes and Hail in Indiana, November 17, 2013

At 1422EST, this EF-2 tornado developed along the Illinois-Indiana state line, just west of Rileysburg. A church was pushed off its foundation and the exterior walls collapsed in Rileysburg. A train car was also pushed off railroad tracks and a grain elevator was damaged in Rileysburg. Two mobile homes were completely destroyed to the west-southwest of Covington. At 1425EST, the tornado moved into south-central Warren County. Some trees were downed west of Covington in Warren County. The tornado lifted 2 miles west of Covington at 1426EST.

At 1432EST, this EF-2 tornado touched down in NE Veedersburg where there was roof damage to a large manufacturing plant. The most extensive damage with this EF-2 tornado occurred in the town of Mellott. One mobile home was completely destroyed, with four additional mobile homes that were either rolled off their foundation or damaged. An old retail shop with a cinder block base had the exterior wall collapse. A residence a little over two miles east of Newtown, had a garage and barn destroyed, as well as the entire roof removed from the home. From 1442EST to 1443EST, the tornado crossed through the far northwest corner of Montgomery County not causing much damage. Then the tornado moved into southwest Tippecanoe County causing damage to a shed and a home. At 1445EST, the tornado lifted 4 miles north-northeast of Wingate.

At 1447EST, this EF-1 tornado touched down 3 miles southeast of New Richmond. The tornado hit two metal buildings near the Weaver Popcorn plant. Metal debris, insulation, and 2x4s from the buildings were scattered to the northeast along a path just under two miles long. The tornado lifted 1.5 miles west of Linden at 1450EST.

At 1447EST, this EF-1 tornado touched down near State Route 52 in northwest Tippecanoe County and moved northeast while downing trees, demolishing a small shed, and snapping 9 utility poles in northwest Tippecanoe County. The tornado lifted at 1451EST near County Road 750 North, east of State Route 231.

A measured 82 mph thunderstorm wind gust was observed in this location. No damage was reported.

At 1451EST, this EF-0 tornado touched down in South Raub and damaged a shed and a grain bin during the short duration and path length it was on the ground. The tornado lifted at 1452EST.

At 1452EST, this EF-2 tornado touched down 3 miles northwest of Romney. The Southwestern Elementary and Middle School to the northwest of Romney both sustained significant damage to their structures. The gymnasium at the middle school had a wall blown out, with roof damage to both schools. Some other homes sustained roof and structural damage as well. Trees were downed too. This tornado lifted 7 miles south of Lafayette at 1455EST.

At 1454EST, this EF-3 tornado touched down 5 miles south-southeast of Lafayette. This EF-3 tornado impacted the Subaru and Voest Alpine plants southeast of Lafayette. Both sustained significant damage consistent with a low end EF-3 rating. Property and tree damage then continued northeast to the north of Dayton. The tornado crossed through the far northwest corner of Clinton County causing mainly tree damage. Then, the tornado moved into southwest Carroll county. A hog farm sustained damage to several outbuildings in extreme southwest Carroll County. Additional damage was found in Cutler. Much of the damage across Carroll County ranged between EF-0 and EF-1. This tornado crossed into Cass County near State Route 18 at 1517EST, continuing for nearly an additional 10 miles. The total path length including Cass County is 39 miles. The tornado lifted 4 miles southwest of Grissom Air Reserve Base at 1527EST.

At 1456EST, this EF-2 tornado touched down 4.5 miles west-northwest of Decker. The most extensive damage was found north of Decker along Old Decker Road, just to the east of Route 41. The second story of a home was removed with the exterior walls collapsed. This tornado continued until it was 6 miles southeast of Vincennes at 1506EST. The estimated maximum wind speed with this EF-2 tornado was 130 mph.

At 1456EST, this EF-1 tornado touched down 3 miles west of Stockwell. The tornado caused damage to an old barn, scattering some debris. The tornado continued along a northeast path where in varied in strength at times. It eventually caused considerable damage to a second barn as well as siding and window damage to a house. Debris was scattered northeasterly across a field for over another mile. This tornado lifted 3 miles north of Stockwell at 1500EST.

An estimated 60 mph thunderstorm wind gust was observed at the intersection of Highway 231 and State Route 26.

At 1454EST, this EF-3 tornado touched down 5 miles south-southeast of Lafayette. This EF-3 tornado impacted the Subaru and Voest Alpine plants southeast of Lafayette. Both sustained significant damage consistent with a low end EF-3 rating. Property and tree damage then continued northeast to the north of Dayton. At 1454EST, this EF-3 tornado touched down 5 miles south-southeast of Lafayette. This EF-3 tornado impacted the Subaru and Voest Alpine plants southeast of Lafayette. At 1513EST, the EF-2 tornado touched down in Michigantown. This EF-2 tornado caused damage to a hog farm and several properties northeast of Michigantown, with additional damage found to the east of Rossville. At 1519EST, the tornado crossed into southwest Howard County. The tornado was at its strongest as it crossed through the southeast side of Kokomo, causing extensive property damage. A BMO Bank was destroyed with significant damage to several fast food restaurants along South Washington Street. The tornado lifted 2 miles north of Greentown at 1536EST.

An estimated 60 mph thunderstorm wind gust was observed in this location. Two foot diameter trees were reported to be uprooted as well.

At 1513EST, the EF-2 tornado touched down in Michigantown. This EF-2 tornado caused damage to a hog farm and several properties northeast of Michigantown, with additional damage found to the east of Rossville. At 1519EST, the tornado crossed into southwest Howard County. The tornado was at its strongest as it crossed through the southeast side of Kokomo, causing extensive property damage. A BMO Bank was destroyed with significant damage to several fast food restaurants along South Washington Street. The tornado lifted 2 miles north of Greentown at 1536EST.

At 1520EST, this EF-2 tornado touched down 2.8 miles west-southwest of Washington. The tornado moved into the southwest side of Washington, with property damage in the city of Washington. An entire home was knocked off of its foundation near the intersection of Fourth and Sycamore Streets. The tornado lifted at 1523EST in Washington.

At 1529EST, this small EF-2 tornado damaged several well built homes in the vicinity of East Ricketts Street in Kokomo. The tornado then crossed East Hoffer Street, damaging a UAW building before lifting at 1530EST.

At 1536EST, this EF-2 tornado touched down 3 miles southwest of Lebanon. The tornado tracked from southwest of Lebanon through an industrial area just west of Interstate 65 and State Route 39. The tornado crossed Interstate 65 near the State Route 39 interchange, Exit 139, and heavily damaged a Starbucks on the east side of the interchange. Several homes sustained damage in the neighborhood directly east-northeast of the Starbucks. The tornado lifted one mile south of Lebanon at 1542EST.

At 1546EST, this EF-1 tornado touched down 5 miles northeast of Lebanon. The tornado was on the ground northeast of Lebanon, from near County Road 500 East and 300 South, ending just west of US Route 421 just north of the intersection with County Road 400 North at 1550EST. Mainly tree damage occurred.

Trees, two feet in diameter, were downed near 200 East and 500 North due to damaging thunderstorm wind gusts.

A measured 65 mph thunderstorm wind gust was observed at the Indianapolis International Airport.

At 1557EST, this EF-1 tornado touched down one mile west-northwest of Bedford and tracked across the north side of Bedford. Most of the funnel was aloft, but intermittently touched down several times which split and uprooted trees, knocked down power lines, and caused some roof and structural damage to several homes. The worst of the damage was along M, N, and O Streets on the north side of Bedford. Several witnesses observed one or two small, narrow funnels dropping up and down from a wide wall cloud. Many witnesses described a strong pressure change, a green sky, and a roar as the tornado went through. The tornado lifted for good at 1559EST 1.5 miles northeast of Bedford. At 1605EST, this EF-1 tornado touched down a half mile south-southwest of Atlanta. The tornado tracked through the town of Atlanta, producing damage to structures in town. At 1607EST, the tornado path crossed into south-central Tipton County and ended to the east of Cicero Creek, just north of the Hamilton-Tipton County line at 1608EST.

At 1605EST, this EF-1 tornado touched down a half mile south-southwest of Atlanta. The tornado tracked through the town of Atlanta, producing damage to structures in town. At 1607EST, the tornado path crossed into south-central Tipton County and ended to the east of Cicero Creek, just north of the Hamilton-Tipton County line at 1608EST. Mainly trees were damaged in Tipton County.

A measured 60 mph thunderstorm wind gust was observed near the intersection of State Route 109 and Shirley Road.

A 30 inch diameter tree was downed on to a car in this location due to damaging thunderstorm wind gusts.

Multiple trees were reported down in this location due to damaging thunderstorm wind gusts.

Power lines were downed in this location due to damaging thunderstorm wind gusts.

Damaging thunderstorm wind gusts caused downed flag poles, shingles to be blown off a roof, and 4 inch diameter trees to be downed.

A 3-foot diameter, healthy tree was damaged near the intersection of County Roads 900 East and 300 North.
