A shortwave trough moving across northern North Dakota forced a baroclinic zone southeastward through the Dakotas during the afternoon hours of Saturday, July 17th. This caused the erosion of a capping inversion in place across southeastern North Dakota, leading to the development and intensification of thunderstorms in the James River Valley region south of Jamestown.
