Tornadoes and Flash Flooding in Texas, June 10, 2009

Several trees were knocked down across the county.

Pea to Nickel size hail was reported on CR 576 in southwestern Stephens County.

Nickel size hail was reported in Graham.

Nickel size hail was reported 5 miles east of Graham.

A large oak tree was split in half at Oak Street Baptist Church. Part of the tree fell on the street.

The drainage ditch at Shawnee Park was flooded and the water flowed onto Elm Street. Several roads in the city were left impassable due to heavy rain from an MCS.

The Brazos River Authority reported extensive damage at Possum Kingdom Lake. Twenty-three docks broke loose and their walkways fell fully or partially into the water. A total of 41 docks were damaged with one being completely sunk and another turned on its side and partially sunk. At Scenic Point Northview Marina, the walkway, fuel pump dock, and marina office platform were damaged. Two boats were also damaged at the same marina. At Breakers Marina, walkways were separated and three wind breaks were broken off. At Willow Beach Marina, the fuel pump dock broke loose and overturned. Three houses in Hogg Bend had missing roofs and several other structures reported missing shingles. Sam's Storage had roof damage to several units and the Sandy Creek Marina Storage had damage from debris hitting the walls. In addition, several big trees were also down around the lake with some blocking roads. Several lake and road signs were blown down and several swim buoy lines were damaged. A pontoon boat attached to a trailer bed was blown across FM 2951.

Numerous large trees are reported down along HWY 199 from near Joplin to near Springtown. Several houses had roof damage due to tree limbs falling on them.

Golfball size hail was reported in Perrin.

A barn was damaged and power lines were down in the Adell/Whitt area.

An 80 mph wind gust was measured in Big Salty, 8 miles south of Runaway Bay.

Tree limbs 6 inches in diameter were down 1 mile south of Springtown.

A small stadium booth was blown away and several trees were down or had their tops torn off.

Major damage to hundreds of trees was sustained in Springtown. One 80 feet tall, 10 feet wide, 100 year old pecan tree fell through the roof of a doublewide on Walnut Creek Drive. Numerous trees had to be cleared from roads around the city. Portable buildings, sheds, and fences were also damaged across town. Shingles were torn off numerous homes. City Hall lost a flag pole, gutters on the building, a light on top of the building, and shingles. A light tower at the SISD Event Complex that was designed to sustain high winds was broken.

Numerous large trees were uprooted or destroyed in Bonnie Bell Estates south of Springtown.

Trees limbs 10 inches in diameter were down in Willow Park.

Nickel size hail was reported in Slidell.

Numerous large trees were uprooted or destroyed in Reno. Clean up efforts took 3 days to complete.

A home near Boat Club Road and Caballo Street was struck by lightning and sustained moderate damage. The lightning bolt entered through the roof and emerged through the laundry room. No possessions in the home were lost.

A recently built home on Centerboard Lane near Eagle Mountain Lake was completely destroyed in a fire started by lightning. All new appliances, furniture, and entertainment systems were lost.

Quarter size hail was reported in Sanger.

A Ham radio operator measured 75 mph winds in Azle. Large tree limbs were knocked down around Azle.

Significant damage occurred at Eagle Mountain Lake Marina. Most of the damage was to the docks, dock roofs, and walkways. Only one boat was lost and a few had scratches and dings. Eight teenagers were trapped during the storm and had to be lead out to safety.

Measured winds of 67 mph were reported in Thorp Springs with debris blowing around.

Fort Worth Fire Deparment responded to a total of 7 structure fires during this MCS event: a commercial building on the 1100 block of North Sylvania Avenue, a residence in the 10300 block of Vintage Drive, a residence in the 1800 block of Marlene Drive, a residence in the 3800 block of Buckhorn Place, a residence in the 4500 block of East Loop 820, a residence at Wilbarger Street and Martin Luther King Freeway, and a residence at Shadydell Drive and Boat Club Road.

Heavy rainfall caused flooding along Walnut Creek Drive; likely the result of the nearby creek overflowing its banks.

A COOP Observer measured 75 mph winds on Boat Club Road in Lake Worth.

Peak winds of 60-65 mph were estimated at the Heritage Creek Airstrip located 9 miles southeast of Decatur. Small tree limbs were down.

An EF-0 tornado traveled from Roanoke to Trophy Club. Storm spotters reported rotation and debris on the ground.

Carports were destroyed at the Indigo Point Apartment complex.

A traffic light pole was twisted around 90 degrees along Highway 114 1 mile northwest of Westlake.

Numerous fences were down in the Harriet Creek Subdivision located near FM 156 and HWY 114. Winds were estimated to be 70 mph.

Estimated winds of 60-65 mph were reported near North Tarrant Parkway and Davis Boulevard in North Richland Hills. Fence posts were snapped and tree limbs were down.

A 3 foot diameter tree fell onto a house near College Avenue and Kilpatrick Lane. At the intersection of Whitney and Merritt, several large bradford pear trees and silver maple trees were knocked down. Other downed tree branches, uprooted trees, downed power lines, and downed fences were reported throughout Flower Mound.

A retired NWS employee reported a brief touchdown on FM 1171 3 miles west of FM 2499.

Tree limbs that were 3-6 inches in diameter were broken off near the border of Flower Mound and Lewisville.

The Villas at Waterchase apartment complex in Lewisville was hit by an EF-1 tornado. Sixteen units sustained some type of structural damage. Four chimneys were snapped off roofs on various buildings, a brick wall crumpled on one building and the roof of the same building was peeled back exposing the apartment homes.

Part of the roof of City Garage at Princeton Street and Valley Parkway was torn off and landed on a nearby home. The Lewisville Visitor's Center also sustained roof damage and had to be closed.

The Fort Worth Spinks Airport (KFWS) AWOS measured a peak wind of 64 mph.

A UPS tractor trailer was blown over onto an embankment on Highway 121 when strong crosswinds caused it to tip over.

A 74 mph wind gust was measured near I-35E and State School Road in Denton.

A large bradford pear tree was snapped at a residence on Sublett Road in Arlington.

Most of the ceiling of a drive-through bank at Hebron Parkway and Old Denton Road in Carrollton was lost.

Peak winds of 70 mph were estimated 1 mile east-northeast of New Hope.

The AWOS in Grand Prairie measured a peak wind of 58 mph.

The Saddle Creek Apartment complex in Euless was damaged and about 2 dozen tenants were displaced.

The Bear Creek Apartment complex in Euless was damaged.

An EF0 tornado in Hebron was video taped by a storm chaser. This tornado occurred in a field south of SH 121 behind the Best Buy. The tornado occurred along the leading edge of the MCS, but video evidence suggests it was not a gustnado.

The KDFW ASOS measured a peak wind of 64 mph.

A spotter measured a 63 mph wind gust in the Walnut Creek area in Mansfield.

Numerous trees were uprooted or knocked down in Coppell. Tree limbs were also knocked down. Many of the trees that were knocked over were bradford pears. Power outages also occurred.

Estimated winds of 75 mph were reported in Frisco on the Denton County side. Large tree limbs were also reported down.

A 72 mph wind gust was measured at a Frisco Fire Station.

Large trees were split in two and power lines were down in Frisco.

A grain silo was overturned near Pizza Hut Park in Frisco.

A large tree fell onto Jim's Cleaners on East Broad Street in Mansfield causing approximately $1,000 in damage to the roof.

Some service roads along I-35 in Denton were impassable and were being closed.

A 78 mph wind gust was measured at a Plano School net site.

Large tree limbs were down in Richardson.

Two tree limbs that were 5 inches in diameter and 4-7 feet long were knocked down near W Parker Road and Custer Road in Plano.

KRBD (Dallas Executive Airport) ASOS measured a 71 mph wind gust.

Three feet of water was reported over the road at I-20 and Bryant Irvin Road.

Tree limbs ranging from 1-6 were knocked down at Beaumont Ranch southeast of Grandview.

Peak winds of 60 mph were estimated 3 miles east of Addison. Large trees limbs were down.

Large tree limbs were down near Stacy Road and SH 121. Power flashes were also observed.

Several large trees were down in the Walnut Grove Estates, located just northeast of HWY 380 and FM 2478.

Numerous trees that were 6-10 inches in diameter were down across Celina. Power lines were also down.

The Celina Fire Department estimated 70 mph winds.

Peak winds of 75 mph were reported in McKinney and large tree limbs were down. Power lines were also reported down around the city and many downed power lines blocked roads.

The Lifeline Community Church on Haymarket Road in Balch Springs was damaged by high winds. Much of the roof, which was under repair at the time, was ripped off and the inside of the church was damaged. Services could not be held at the church because of the damage and it was estimated that repairs would take 3-6 months.

Peak winds of 60 mph were estimated in Waxahachie. Power lines and a few trees were knocked down.

Estimated winds of 65 mph blew down trees, fences, power poles, and power lines in Van Alstyne. Some trees fell on power lines. One large tree in particular snapped about half way up and partially fell onto the building of the Van Alstyne Leader.

The roof was lost off a home on FM 2862.

Peak winds of 60 mph were estimated in Ennis.

Numerous tree limbs were down throughout Trenton. The power was also knocked out for nearly 4 hours.

A home in Trenton was struck by lightning and some appliances in the home were damaged.

Trees and power lines were down throughout Bonham.

Numerous trees were down across the county. An estimated 100 trees were down in the western half of the county. Dozens of downed trees were estimated in the eastern portions of the county. A large tree fell over the road at an intersection of FM 804 to the southeast of Athens. Approximately 5,000 electric customers were without power in the western half of the county.

A spotter estimated winds of 65 mph south of Wills Point.

A wind gust of 60 mph was estimated in Petty.

Numerous trees were down just north of Star.

Numerous trees were uprooted, twisted, and snapped along FM 1047 from Star to the Game Warden Academy. A trailer house next to the Academy was rolled onto it's side and several barns lost their roofs in the same area.

Trees and large limbs were reported down on State Highway 19 near CR 1116.

In Sulphur Springs, trees and large limbs were down in the 1500 block of East Industrial Drive and along State Highway 154 south of the city. A large tree on South Davis Street was also snapped near the base and fell against a house. Power outages were reported on the south side of town.

Peak winds of 60 mph were estimated in Grand Saline.

Trees and large limbs were reported down on FM 69 in the Black Oak area south of Como.

A wind gust of 65 mph was estimated in Paris. Tree limbs in Paris were knocked down and a few power outages occurred.

Lightning started a fire at the Chatham Creek Apartments on Thomason Circle in Arlington. This was a two-alarm fire. Eight people were displaced from their home.

Spotters estimated 60 mph winds in Van. Trees were down across HWY 110 in Van and power lines were also down.

An 18 wheeler was blown on its side and another was blown off the road near I-20 and HWY 110 South south of Van.

Hail up to Tennis Ball size was covering the ground in Evant.

Peak winds of 60 mph were estimated in Reno.

Trees and large limbs were reported down near the intersection of CR 4546 and 4544.

A lightning strike is believed to have started a fire that burned the saltwater disposal tanks on Highway 16 South.
