Fire of an unknown origin consumed 20000 acres of grassland located near Square Butte. The blaze burned an area 10 miles wide by 5 miles long and was aided by strong surface winds. Approximately 60 firefighters from several communities as well as from federal agencies battled the blaze which took over 8 hours to contain. The fire destroyed one outbuilding and 13 haystacks.
