Deaths and injuries are direct and indirect together, as the offices filed them. Damage is property and crops in the dollars of the year, not adjusted for inflation, and only where an office estimated it.
At mid-afternoon, the interaction of near 70 degree dewpoints and strong insolation caused an increase in the instability across southeast North Carolina. The seabreeze remained pinned at the coast across South Carolina, but did make some progress inland across North Carolina. The seabreeze was not strong enough to initiate convection on its own. A mid-level short wave trough approached from the west and this is when convection began to fire. Eventually, thunderstorms intensified to severe levels.
