AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GLASGOW MT
311 PM MDT WED JUL 30 2008

.SHORT TERM...FOR NORTHEAST MONTANA...TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY...
UPPER TROF LIFTING ACROSS CENTRAL MONTANA WILL PUSH FRONT OUT OF
EASTERN MONTANA AND INTO NORTH DAKOTA TONIGHT. A FEW THUNDERSTORMS
ARE DEVELOPING IN THE UNSTABLE AIR AHEAD OF THE UPPER TROF.

HIGH PRESSURE MOVES INTO THE REGION FOR THURSDAY AS THE RIDGE
BEGINS TO REBOUND TO THE WEST. TEMPERATURES WILL COOL SLIGHTLY FOR
THURSDAY WITH THE TROF MOVING OUT OF THE REGION. THE RIDGE MOVES
OVER MONTANA ON FRIDAY...TEMPERATURES WILL AGAIN WARM. EBERT

.LONG TERM...FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY...
12Z MODELS CONTINUE TO INDICATE AN UPPER TROUGH REMAINING OVER THE
PACIFIC NORTHWEST THROUGH THE WEEKEND. BY EARLY NEXT WEEK THE
UPPER TROUGH SWINGS THROUGH THE REGION WITH MODELS SHOWING SOME
CONSISTENCY WITH SURFACE LOW DEVELOPMENT TO THE SOUTHEAST OF THE
LOCAL FORECAST AREA WITH UPPER JET SUPPORT OVER THE CWA. IF THIS
PATTERN HOLDS TRUE THIS WOULD BRING A DECENT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS. HOWEVER...WILL STAY CONSERVATIVE WITH POPS AT THIS
TIME AS THIS TYPE OF PATTERN IS ATYPICAL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR.
AFTER THIS...A COOLER CANADIAN AIRMASS SINKS SOUTHWARD AS THE UPPER
TROUGH DEPARTS AND WEAK RIDGING DEVELOPS OVER THE AREA.
TEMPERATURES SHOULD TREND FROM NEAR TO ABOVE SEASONAL AVERAGES AT
THE BEGINNING OF THE PERIOD TO NEAR TO BELOW NORMAL BY THE END OF
THE PERIOD. AJZ

PREVIOUS LONG TERM DISCUSSION...
THE UPPER TROUGH CONTINUES TO BE A DIFFICULT ONE FOR THE MODELS TO
HANDLE. THERE IS A TREND...INCLUDING THE LATEST GFS AND CMC...TO
KEEP THE MAIN PART OF THE TROUGH OVER THE PACIFIC NW LONGER...WITH
NE MT IN A SW FLOW ALOFT AHEAD OF IT. THE MAIN TROUGH THEN MOVES
ENE GIVING THE BEST CHANCE OF ANY THUNDERSTORMS WITH IT ABOUT MON.
MODELS HAVE BEEN VARYING QUITE A BIT WITH THE INTENSITY AND HOW
MUCH IT WILL INFLUENCE OUR AREA AS WELL. BETWEEN FRI NIGHT AND
MON...IT STILL APPEARS THE BEST CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS IS SAT/SAT
NIGHT. A BROAD LOW PRESSURE AT THE SURFACE CONTINUES OVER E MT
DURING THE ENTIRE TIME. TEMPS REMAIN MAINLY 85-95 RANGE WHICH IS
ABOUT NORMAL FOR THE PEAK OF SUMMER.

THE COOLEST AIRMASS DURING THE PERIOD FOLLOWS BEHIND THIS UPPER
TROUGH TUE AND WED AS THICKNESSES DROP TO THE 560S DM. AT THE SAME
TIME THE TYPICALLY LARGE MID-SUMMER HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT OVER MUCH
OF THE U.S...IS TRYING TO RIDGE N-NW INTO MT. SIMONSEN

&&

.AVIATION...
SCATTERED CLOUDS AT OR ABOVE 10K FT WILL LINGER INTO THIS EVENING
BEFORE CLEARING OVERNIGHT. ISOLATED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL
CONTINUE INTO THIS EVENING WITH NOT MUCH MORE THAN A BRIEF PERIOD
OF RAIN AND A GUSTY ERRATIC WIND. A WEST WIND OF 15 TO 20KT LATE
THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING WILL DIMINISH TO LESS THAN 10KT AFTER
SUNSET...AND THEN INCREASE TO 10 TO 15KT THURSDAY. AJZ
